Bruno Fernandes has lauded Altay Bayindir for his outstanding performance in Manchester United’s 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Arsenal, after a 1-1 draw at the Emirates. Bayindir, who was making just his fifth appearance since joining the club from Fenerbahce in September 2023, became the hero of the shootout by saving penalties from Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz, helping secure the win for United and a spot in the next round of the FA Cup.
Fernandes, who has been a key figure in United's midfield, spoke highly of Bayindir’s contribution and praised the goalkeeper’s professionalism and dedication. "It's a big moment for him, the first penalty and another save here, and we are really happy for him," Fernandes told BBC Sport after the match. "It's tough to be second goalkeeper, he came here to play. Whenever he gets his chance, he's top class for us, he's top class in training, he's always available for everyone and he truly deserves this moment."
Bayindir's performance stood out in a high-pressure situation, where the spotlight often falls on goalkeepers during penalty shootouts. Despite being a backup to Andre Onana, Bayindir’s calmness and composure under pressure were key to Manchester United's progression in the competition. Fernandes emphasized that Bayindir’s consistent readiness, both in training and when called upon, is a testament to his character and quality.
Bayindir himself was humble and focused on the team's success, emphasizing the importance of staying prepared for any opportunity that might arise. "I just help my team. I am working every day. I am patient. I just want to help this great team. I want to make everyone happy for this great club," Bayindir explained. His attitude reflects a deep understanding of his role as a backup goalkeeper and the mindset required to be ready when called into action, no matter the situation.
He further added, "If you are not playing, it doesn't matter. You have to be ready every minute, every second. If you are a Man Utd player, you have to always be ready." This mentality is crucial for any professional footballer, especially a goalkeeper in a team like Manchester United, where competition for places is fierce, and every opportunity to contribute must be seized.
In addition to his individual performance, Bayindir also spoke about the positive relationship he shares with manager Ruben Amorim. Bayindir’s comments reflect the strong bond between the players and their coach. "We love him, and he's always trying to do his best. He has a very good relationship with the players, and we are trusting him; he is trusting us. We are fighting together," Bayindir shared. This strong connection between the squad and the manager plays a vital role in maintaining a unified approach and focusing on the collective goals of the team.
Bayindir’s vital contribution in the shootout, along with his commitment to maintaining readiness despite being a backup, showcased his importance to the team. His performance highlighted not only his technical ability but also his mental fortitude, which was crucial in Manchester United’s successful FA Cup campaign. As the team continues to push for success in multiple competitions, Bayindir's dedication to the club and his readiness to step up when needed are invaluable qualities that reinforce the strength of Manchester United’s squad as a whole.
This victory further solidified Manchester United's position in the FA Cup, and Bayindir’s crucial saves in the shootout were a testament to the importance of every player, regardless of their role in the team. His contributions will not be forgotten, as his ability to perform under pressure continues to provide vital moments for the Red Devils in their quest for silverware.
