Carlo Ancelotti has expressed his strong belief that Vinicius Junior will claim the prestigious Ballon d'Or this season, especially following the Brazilian's breathtaking hat-trick in Real Madrid's thrilling 5-2 comeback victory against Borussia Dortmund. This match, which echoed their recent Champions League final, saw Dortmund take an early lead with goals from Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens, leaving Real Madrid facing a daunting challenge at halftime. However, the second half brought a remarkable turnaround that highlighted Madrid's resilience and attacking prowess.
Ancelotti was particularly impressed by Vinicius's character during the game, stating, "What I can say is that it's rare to see a player who plays a second half like Vinicius did. And not because of the three goals, but because of his character; he's extraordinary." The Real Madrid manager emphasized that Vinicius's contributions to the team extend beyond just scoring goals; his overall impact on the game is what sets him apart. Ancelotti believes Vinicius deserves the Ballon d'Or not only for his recent performances but also for his consistent excellence over the past year.
Since joining Real Madrid, Vinicius has established himself as a key player, contributing significantly to the team's successes. In the previous season alone, he amassed an impressive tally of 50 goal involvements across all competitions, including 32 goals and 18 assists in 53 matches. His ability to change the course of a game was evident against Dortmund, where he played a crucial role in orchestrating the comeback. After Antonio Rudiger's header halved the deficit, Vinicius quickly equalized, setting the stage for his team’s resurgence. He then scored two more goals to complete his hat-trick, showcasing his exceptional skill and determination.
The statistical breakdown of the match further illustrates Real Madrid's dominance in the second half, where they achieved an expected goals (xG) total of 2.41 compared to Dortmund's mere 0.09. This marked a significant achievement, as it was the first time under Ancelotti that Real Madrid won a Champions League match after trailing by two goals at halftime. The coach acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "We were timid in the first half," while praising the team’s increased quality and pressure in the latter stages of the match.
Ancelotti's insights into the second-half performance serve as a reminder of the importance of starting games with intensity and confidence, rather than waiting to respond after falling behind. The match against Dortmund not only highlighted Real Madrid's ability to overcome adversity but also reinforced Vinicius Junior's pivotal role in the team's success this season. As the Ballon d'Or discussions heat up, it is clear that Vinicius's extraordinary talent and impact on the field have made him a strong contender for this prestigious accolade.
With the momentum from this impressive victory, Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior look forward to building on their successes as they navigate through the Champions League and domestic competitions in the coming months.
