Catarina Macario played a pivotal role in Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, helping the Blues advance to the Champions League quarter-finals and finish top of Group B with a perfect record. After coming on as a substitute, Macario scored two vital penalties, securing all three points for Chelsea and ensuring they remain unbeaten in the competition. The win marked Chelsea’s 16th victory in their last 17 matches under Sonia Bompastor, continuing their strong form since Bompastor took over from Emma Hayes.
Real Madrid initially took the lead in the first half through a stunning strike by Scotland's Caroline Weir, but Chelsea made a strong comeback after the break. Macario, who has been a standout performer since joining Chelsea, admitted that the team faced a difficult start but was determined to make an impact when she entered the game. “I went out knowing what I had to do,” Macario said after the match. “I wanted to have a positive impact and give my all, to give my team more options and bring energy.”
Her efforts were crucial in turning the game in Chelsea’s favor. Macario emphasized the need to regain possession and control of the match, something that Real Madrid had dominated in the first half. “In the first half, Real Madrid had a great performance. We needed to have more possession and I was prepared to change that,” Macario explained.
The American international’s contributions were instrumental in Chelsea’s turnaround. With the Blues trailing, Macario took charge, scoring two clinical penalties that put Chelsea ahead and ultimately gave them the three points they needed to stay at the top of the group. Her performance highlighted her ability to remain composed under pressure and influence the game in crucial moments.
Looking ahead to the quarter-finals, Macario is unfazed about who Chelsea will face next, displaying confidence in her team’s ability to go all the way. "It doesn’t matter who comes," Macario said. "We are confident in our abilities." Chelsea's unbeaten run in the competition and their overall strong form under Bompastor have made them one of the favorites to lift the Champions League trophy this season. With Macario’s continued impact, Chelsea are set to be a formidable force in the latter stages of the tournament.
