Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed caution regarding his team’s chances of challenging for the Premier League title, despite their strong start to the season. Currently sitting in second place in the Premier League, just four points behind leaders Liverpool, Chelsea have maintained an impressive unbeaten run over their last seven league games. However, Maresca is wary of looking too far ahead and believes the team is not yet ready to seriously contend for the title.
In an interview, Maresca discussed the team's performance, highlighting that while Chelsea are playing well, they still have room for improvement. "You can smell that [a title race], you can feel that. Probably this is the reason why I said we are not ready because we don't feel that and we don't smell that in this moment. Hopefully soon we can be there," he remarked, acknowledging the team's strong position but maintaining a sense of realism about the challenges ahead.
Maresca’s approach emphasizes focusing on the present, rather than getting caught up in future expectations. "When you start to think about 'in two days, three days, one month, two months,' it's the beginning of the bad times," he said, stressing the importance of taking it one step at a time. His philosophy is to ensure daily progress, making incremental improvements rather than getting distracted by the long-term goal of a title challenge.
Chelsea's attacking play has been one of the highlights of their season. With 35 goals in just 12 games, they lead the league in scoring, showcasing a potent attacking unit that has been firing on all cylinders. Over their last three matches, Chelsea have scored at least three goals in each game—a feat not achieved since 1954, when the club went on to win the title under manager Ted Drake. This potent attack, combined with solid team performances, has certainly put Chelsea in a promising position.
One standout performer has been Jadon Sancho, who has impressed since joining Chelsea on loan from Manchester United in the summer. Sancho scored the opening goal in Chelsea's thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham, and he will be looking to continue his fine form. The winger aims to score in three consecutive league games for the first time since February 2021, and his contributions have been vital in Chelsea's recent successes.
Despite Chelsea's attacking prowess and recent victories, Maresca remains cautious, preferring to keep the team's focus on continuous development. With games against teams like Brentford coming up, the Chelsea manager knows that maintaining momentum and not letting their eyes wander too far ahead is key to the team’s long-term success. Maresca’s message is clear: while the title may be in sight, the focus must remain on short-term improvements, and only then will Chelsea be ready to make a serious push for the Premier League crown.
