Chelsea Women continued their impressive form in the Women's Champions League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Celtic, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals and extending their unbeaten streak in Group B. This result further solidified their dominance in the competition, as they remained three points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the group, effectively securing qualification with two matches to spare. The win also followed a resounding 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the Women’s Super League (WSL), where Chelsea maintained their perfect record, winning all seven of their league matches.
Chelsea’s head coach, Sonia Bompastor, expressed her satisfaction with the performance, emphasizing the team's depth and rotation. She made six changes to the starting lineup for the Celtic clash, ensuring players got adequate rest ahead of their upcoming match against Manchester United on Sunday. "We also remain top of the table, which is also something we want to make sure we achieve," Bompastor remarked, underlining the significance of Chelsea’s continued success both in Europe and domestically.
One of the highlights of the match was the introduction of 17-year-old Lola Brown, who made her professional debut by coming off the bench in the 85th minute. Bompastor praised Brown for her dynamism and intelligence, describing it as a special week not only for the young player but also for the club as a whole. “She’s a very talented player, and it’s a pleasure for me as a coach to give her that chance,” Bompastor added.
Reflecting on her experience, Bompastor, who previously worked with young players at Lyon's academy, emphasized the importance of nurturing talent from within the club. She expressed her strong commitment to involving young players in the first team, believing it was essential for their development and for the long-term success of Chelsea Women. By continuing to integrate emerging talents like Brown, Bompastor is ensuring that Chelsea maintains a robust pipeline of future stars while achieving success in the present.
As Chelsea looks ahead, the win against Celtic has set them up for another strong challenge in both the Champions League and WSL. With the squad rotation strategy working effectively, Bompastor's focus on youth development and ensuring squad depth will be crucial for Chelsea as they aim to compete at the highest level across multiple competitions.
