Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri has expressed concern over the grouping of the Indian women’s football team in the upcoming Women’s Asian Cup, calling it a “tricky group” that poses serious challenges. As the draw was revealed, India found itself placed alongside some of the strongest teams in Asia, raising immediate discussions about the road ahead.
In a recent interaction with the media, Chhetri commented on the difficulty of the group and stressed the importance of mental strength, consistency, and tactical discipline. According to him, while India has made notable strides in women's football over the past few years, the level of competition in the Asian Cup is a different challenge altogether.
Chhetri emphasized that group-stage matches in such tournaments are often decisive. “You do not get second chances at this level. Every game is a knockout in spirit, if not on paper,” he said. He praised the current women’s squad for its talent and potential but also highlighted the need for rigorous preparation, especially in fitness, match sharpness, and defensive organization.
India’s group includes teams that have historically reached the semifinals and finals of the tournament, with players who are regulars in top Asian and European leagues. This makes the group particularly tough for India, which is still developing its professional infrastructure in women’s football. However, Chhetri remains optimistic. He stated that this kind of high-pressure exposure will only improve the team’s experience and confidence moving forward.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has already begun intensive training camps for the women’s team in preparation for the Asian Cup. The team is expected to participate in a few international friendlies ahead of the tournament to build momentum and test formations.
Coaches and support staff have also acknowledged the tough nature of the group but remain focused on preparation and motivation. Head Coach Thomas Dennerby noted that while the challenge is significant, it is also a major opportunity for the players to prove themselves against the best.
Sunil Chhetri also urged fans to rally behind the women’s team and support their journey. He noted that while expectations should be realistic, every match should be seen as a chance to grow and showcase India’s development in women’s sports.
The Women’s Asian Cup is not just a tournament but a platform for Indian football to gain global attention and elevate the status of women’s participation in the sport. As India prepares for its campaign, the words of caution and encouragement from Chhetri serve as both a warning and a rallying call. With determination and support, the Indian team aims to overcome the odds and make a lasting impression.
