Cristian Romero has raised concerns over Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing struggles in the Premier League, highlighting the club’s lack of sufficient investment as a key factor contributing to their poor form.

Cristian Romero has raised concerns over Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing struggles in the Premier League, highlighting the club’s lack of sufficient investment as a key factor contributing to their poor form. Despite having led Chelsea 2-0, Spurs suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat, marking their 11th loss from a winning position with a two-goal advantage—setting a new record for such defeats in Premier League history. Romero, who had recently returned from a toe injury, was forced to leave the match early due to another injury concern, which could keep him sidelined for up to six weeks. This latest setback adds to the mounting injury crisis facing Tottenham, with key players such as Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Richarlison, Ben Davies, Mikey Moore, and Guglielmo Vicario all currently unavailable due to injury. Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur is serving a suspension, further depleting the squad.

In a candid interview with Telemundo Deportes, Romero spoke openly about the club’s situation, pointing out the stark contrast between Tottenham’s lack of investment and the strength of their competitors. “The truth is, I would say no comment, but... Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong. Hopefully, they realise it,” he stated. Romero's comments reflect the growing frustration among fans and players alike, as Tottenham continues to struggle despite the significant financial outlay on new signings in recent seasons.

Under manager Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham has made several key signings for the 2024-25 season, including Lucas Bergvall, Odobert, Archie Gray, and Dominic Solanke. However, these players have yet to make a notable impact on the pitch, with the club's performance still faltering. Since Postecoglou’s appointment in July 2023, Spurs have spent approximately £350 million on new talent but have yet to secure any major trophies, leading many to question the effectiveness of their investment strategy.

Despite these challenges, Romero has expressed continued support for Postecoglou. Since joining Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, Romero has played under five different managers, which has made him acutely aware of the instability within the club. Reflecting on his time at Tottenham, Romero remarked, “The last few years, it’s always the same: first the players change; then the coaching staff changes; and it’s always the same people responsible.” His comments suggest that while Postecoglou is a new manager with fresh ideas, the recurring issues at the club stem from deeper-rooted problems that need to be addressed at the highest levels.

Tottenham’s current predicament, combined with their injury crisis and underwhelming performances, has raised serious questions about the direction in which the club is heading. Romero’s call for the club’s leadership, particularly chairman Daniel Levy, to take action and address the investment shortfalls is a reflection of the growing pressure on Spurs to improve both their squad depth and their overall competitiveness in the Premier League and on the European stage. Until these issues are resolved, Tottenham’s struggles are likely to continue, leaving their supporters hoping for a shift in strategy that will bring long-term success to the club.
