Luis de la Fuente, Spain's national football team manager, expressed his pride and admiration for the young players who played a pivotal role in their thrilling 3-2 victory over Switzerland in the Nations League. The match, which took place in Tenerife, was a nail-biting encounter where Spain twice took the lead, only to see Switzerland fight back and equalise. However, it was Bryan Zaragoza who delivered the decisive blow in stoppage time, converting a penalty to secure all three points for Spain.
The game showcased Spain's offensive dominance, as they created 21 shots, 10 of which were on target, and produced an impressive expected goals (xG) tally of 3.21. Despite Switzerland's resilient efforts, which included two equalising goals after strikes from Yeremy Pino and Bryan Gil, Spain’s attacking prowess proved too much to handle. This victory not only gave Spain the win but also ensured they remained unbeaten throughout their Nations League group stage campaign.
Looking ahead to 2024, Spain has enjoyed an exceptional run, staying undefeated across all competitions, with 12 wins and a single draw. This remarkable streak marks their longest period without a loss in a calendar year in competitive matches. Their unbeaten record includes a series of impressive performances, demonstrating their consistency and ability to dominate in various settings.
As a result of their top position in Group A4, Spain will enter the Nations League quarter-finals as one of the seeded teams. De la Fuente reflected on the significance of the victory, acknowledging the team's resilience and the critical role played by the younger players. "We are very happy," he said, emphasizing how football has become increasingly competitive. "It is football like that, and we know the high level and equality that exists."
The Spain coach also highlighted the importance of valuing victories, particularly against strong teams like Switzerland. While Spain has long been regarded as a footballing powerhouse, De la Fuente pointed out that the key difference now is that they are not just playing well—they are consistently winning. “The difference is that now we win, and we win everything,” he added, underscoring the growth in the team’s mentality and approach.
As Spain looks ahead to the Nations League quarter-finals, the focus is on maintaining their impressive form, with De la Fuente's young squad continuing to prove that they have the talent, character, and determination to compete at the highest level.
