The opening goal came in the eighth minute when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing played a precise pass to Kane Wilson, who made no mistake in finishing from close range to give Derby the lead.

Derby County produced a dominant 4-0 victory over Portsmouth, ending a frustrating six-match winless run in the Championship. The Rams’ clinical performance not only delivered a much-needed three points but also moved them away from the relegation zone, providing a significant morale boost.

From the very beginning, Derby showed their intent, taking control of the game early. They scored three goals in the first 30 minutes, setting the tone for a one-sided encounter. The opening goal came in the eighth minute when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing played a precise pass to Kane Wilson, who made no mistake in finishing from close range to give Derby the lead. Just 10 minutes later, Eiran Cashin doubled the advantage with a powerful header, and before the half-hour mark, Ebou Adams added a third, with his shot deflecting off Portsmouth’s Tom McIntyre and past goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid.

Portsmouth, struggling to find any rhythm, did have a few moments, but they were unable to trouble Derby’s defense or goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. Jerry Yates came closest to pulling one back before halftime, but his effort was well saved. The first half was a completely dominant display by Derby, who made the most of their chances and showed their attacking prowess.

In the second half, while Derby eased up a bit, they continued to control the match. The Rams added a fourth goal in the 65th minute when Marcus Harness, a former Portsmouth player, made a low cross that deflected off Marlon Pack and into his own net. It was a tough moment for Pack and summed up Portsmouth’s difficulties on the night.

Portsmouth’s problems weren't over yet, as they nearly conceded a fifth goal late on. Abdoulaye Kamara misjudged a backpass to his goalkeeper, which allowed Kayden Jackson to almost intercept and slot the ball into the net. However, Schmid recovered well and prevented further embarrassment for Kamara.

Despite not winning since early November, Derby's performance was impressive, as they were clinical in front of goal. They scored with their first three shots on target and ended the match with seven shots on target from 17 attempts. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 1.14, which reflects the efficiency of their finishing.

The victory was a vital one for Derby, not just for the points but for the confidence it brings as they move forward in the Championship. With this resounding win, Derby County now have the opportunity to build momentum in upcoming matches and push for a higher position in the table. For Portsmouth, however, it was a tough defeat, and they will need to regroup and improve if they are to avoid slipping further into the relegation battle.
