Emiliano Martinez has been reinstated to Argentina's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru after serving a two-match suspension. The Aston Villa goalkeeper missed Argentina's previous qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia in October due to sanctions imposed by CONMEBOL. The suspension followed an incident during the Copa America, where Martinez made an obscene gesture with the trophy before a match against Chile and also damaged a local TV camera after Argentina's loss to Colombia.
Martinez's return is a boost for Argentina as they look to maintain their top spot in the CONMEBOL qualification group. Argentina is currently leading the standings with 22 points, and their upcoming matches are crucial in securing their place in the 2026 World Cup. The team will face Paraguay on November 14, followed by a home match against Peru five days later.
In addition to Martinez's return, there are a few notable inclusions in Lionel Scaloni's squad. Valencia midfielder Enzo Barrenechea earns his first call-up to the senior team, while Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Leicester City’s Facundo Buonanotte have also been recalled.
Lionel Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami, will once again lead the team as captain. The squad also includes several key players, including Walter Benitez of PSV, Geronimo Rulli from Marseille, and experienced defenders like Cristian Romero from Tottenham and Nicolas Otamendi from Benfica. In midfield, Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea, Leandro Paredes of Roma, and Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool will provide depth, while forwards such as Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid will lead the attacking charge.
Argentina will hope that their talented squad, led by the legendary Messi, can continue their strong performance in the qualifiers as they aim to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.
