However, Carsley defended the choice, explaining that there was regular communication between medical teams at the club and national levels during the squad selection.

England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, is maintaining a positive outlook despite the challenge of nine players withdrawing from the squad due to injury ahead of their Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. The latest withdrawal came from Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, joining a list of notable absentees including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Aaron Ramsdale, and Levi Colwill.

This series of injuries has left Carsley facing an unusual situation in what will be his final games as interim manager before Gareth Southgate’s return. England’s captain, Harry Kane, expressed his disappointment over the numerous withdrawals, acknowledging how it could impact the squad’s preparation. However, Carsley, who took charge after Southgate stepped down temporarily, is looking to turn the situation into an opportunity.

In his pre-match press conference, Carsley emphasized focusing on the players who are available. He noted that November has traditionally been a challenging time for player availability due to the congested football calendar, and injuries are always a possibility. Despite the challenges, Carsley highlighted the strong team culture established under Southgate and assistant manager Steve Holland, praising the positive environment that continues to inspire the players. "The focus all camp has been on the players that are here, and it's important that we make the most of the situation," Carsley stated.

The current injury crisis also provides an opportunity for other players to step up and make a significant impact. Carsley expressed confidence that despite these setbacks, the team’s unity and strength would remain intact. The coach has made it clear that the players who have earned their spot in the squad deserve to be there, and now they have a chance to prove themselves on the pitch.

One of the high-profile withdrawals came early in the squad selection process when Jack Grealish, despite not playing for Manchester City since October 20th due to injury, was initially called up. His withdrawal was controversial as Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had questioned the decision, given Grealish’s injury recovery. However, Carsley defended the choice, explaining that there was regular communication between medical teams at the club and national levels during the squad selection. "The medical teams are constantly talking throughout squad selection," Carsley explained. Grealish was assessed upon joining the squad and sent back to Manchester City once it was confirmed that he would not be fit for the games.

Looking ahead to the match against Greece, Carsley and the squad are aiming to close the gap between themselves and the group leaders, Greece, who are currently three points ahead in Group B2. England’s previous meeting with Greece ended in a 2-1 defeat at Wembley last month, but the Three Lions have a strong record against Greece, winning all four of their previous away games against them, with a dominant 9-1 aggregate scoreline. Greece has been in excellent form, holding Europe’s longest active winning streak with five consecutive victories.

With a limited number of games left in the Nations League, England must navigate these final fixtures with the squad they have, and Carsley is hopeful that the remaining players will rise to the occasion and push for qualification.

"The medical teams are constantly talking throughout squad selection," Carsley explained.
