Harwood-Bellis’ debut goal completed the 5-0 victory, marking the first time since 1930 that four players scored their inaugural goals for England in a single match.

Lee Carsley concluded his tenure as England's interim manager with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland, ensuring England’s promotion to the top tier of the Nations League. The dominant performance came at Wembley, where England capitalized on a red card to Liam Scales early in the second half, turning the match in their favor. In what was a historic night for the national team, four players scored their first-ever goals for England, with Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all finding the net.

The match began cautiously, with both teams creating few chances in the first half. Curtis Jones came closest early on, forcing an attempt that was deflected wide, while Kyle Walker missed a header from the resulting corner. However, the game changed dramatically after halftime. Within five minutes of the restart, England were ahead. Scales received his second yellow card for a foul on Jude Bellingham in the box, handing Kane the opportunity to convert from the penalty spot, which he did calmly to open the scoring.

The momentum shifted further as England struck twice more in quick succession. Anthony Gordon, who had been a constant threat, volleyed home his first international goal shortly after Kane’s penalty, doubling the lead. Conor Gallagher made it 3-0 when he latched onto Marc Guehi’s flick-on from a corner to score his first goal for England. Then, Jarrod Bowen, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact by scoring with his first touch from another Bellingham corner, further asserting England’s dominance.

The final blow came in the 79th minute when Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who was making his debut, powered in a header past Republic of Ireland’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Harwood-Bellis’ debut goal completed the 5-0 victory, marking the first time since 1930 that four players scored their inaugural goals for England in a single match. The last time such a feat was achieved was against Northern Ireland, with Harry Burgess, Jimmy Hampson, Sammy Crooks, and Eric Houghton all scoring.

In addition to the new scorers, the match saw Kyle Walker reach a personal milestone, as he made his 38th appearance at Wembley, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record of 37. Only Peter Shilton (52), Bobby Charlton (44), Bobby Moore (43), and Stuart Pearce (41) have played more games at the iconic venue for England.

Reflecting on his brief yet successful period in charge, Carsley expressed satisfaction with how the team had developed under his leadership. He noted that England had achieved three consecutive victories over the Republic of Ireland for the first time, signaling positive progress. Carsley also shared his confidence that he was leaving the team in strong hands for the incoming manager, Thomas Tuchel. Despite his own feelings of mixed emotions about stepping down, Carsley’s tenure was marked by positive results and a growing sense of optimism for the team’s future under Tuchel’s guidance.

This victory also secured England's promotion from League B to League A, solidifying their position at the top of the Nations League ahead of the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. Carsley’s time as interim manager may have been short, but it was undoubtedly a successful one, with this resounding 5-0 win ensuring the team heads into the new era with momentum.
