Enzo Fernandez has opened up about the challenging start to his career at Chelsea, admitting that his hefty £106.8 million transfer fee did not contribute to his initial struggles at Stamford Bridge. Fernandez joined the Blues from Benfica in January 2023, making him the club’s most expensive signing at the time. While his first six months at the club showed glimpses of his talent, his full first season proved difficult due to a combination of factors, including injuries, managerial changes, and the overall struggles of the team.
In an interview with ESPN, Fernandez reflected on the challenges he faced, stating that the transition to Chelsea was much harder than he had expected. “When I arrived it was very difficult, the first year and a half here: change of coaches, the club wasn't doing well, personal injuries,” he shared. Fernandez underwent a hernia surgery early in his Chelsea career, which kept him out for ten games, further hindering his ability to settle in.
Despite the significant transfer fee that brought high expectations, Fernandez was keen to emphasize that the pressure to perform wasn’t what contributed to his struggles. Instead, it was the combination of personal injuries, tactical adjustments, and the club's instability that posed the biggest challenges. He admitted that he wasn’t satisfied with his performances during this difficult period but remained determined to push through. “I remained focused and tried to enjoy the game without feeling pressured by expectations,” he explained.
However, things began to change when Enzo Maresca took over as manager. Since Maresca's arrival, Fernandez has enjoyed a marked improvement in his form, playing a key role in Chelsea's resurgence in both the Premier League and the Europa Conference League. Under Maresca's leadership, Chelsea has gone on an impressive unbeaten run, with six wins and three draws in their last nine Premier League games. Fernandez has been central to this success, contributing seven goal involvements—three goals and four assists—in just seven league matches.
Fernandez's revival can be attributed to his improved understanding of his position on the field. The Argentine midfielder credits Maresca for helping him adapt to the team’s tactical setup and providing clarity on what was expected from him. “I learned the position in which I had to play,” said Fernandez. “[Maresca] explained to me what he wanted and I was getting the concept.” This improved understanding of his role has not only boosted his confidence but also his overall performance, allowing him to become one of Chelsea's most influential players this season.
In addition to his Premier League performances, Fernandez has also played an instrumental role in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League campaign, where he has registered three assists in just two appearances. His growing influence has been evident as he continues to link up with teammates and create chances for the Blues.
Looking ahead, Fernandez is optimistic about Chelsea's prospects under Maresca's leadership. The 23-year-old believes that, with hard work, humility, and collective effort, Chelsea can achieve great things this season. “The team has shown a very strong character,” Fernandez said, highlighting the resilience and unity within the squad. He believes that this newfound sense of purpose, along with the guidance of Maresca, can help Chelsea reach new heights.
While Fernandez's start at Chelsea was turbulent, the young midfielder is now starting to show the quality that made him one of the most sought-after talents in world football. With Maresca’s guidance, a more settled team, and Fernandez's growing confidence, Chelsea looks poised for a strong second half of the season. The future appears bright for both the player and the club, as they aim to challenge for silverware in the months ahead.
