Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is preparing to make several changes to his squad as the Red Devils gear up for their Europa League opener against FC Twente at Old Trafford on September 26 at 12:30 AM. With a packed schedule ahead, Ten Hag is expected to implement squad rotation to keep his players fresh while balancing their Premier League and European commitments.
Following a disappointing goalless draw against Crystal Palace over the weekend, United’s form has been a mixed bag since returning from the international break. After a heavy 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, Ten Hag's men showed resilience by securing back-to-back victories against Southampton and Barnsley. However, the recent draw has raised concerns about their attacking prowess and overall cohesion on the pitch.
Given the growing intensity of competition in the Premier League, Ten Hag may view the Europa League as a crucial opportunity for his team. Securing a strong start in this tournament is vital, especially considering United’s aim to secure a place in next season's Champions League. The Europa League offers a realistic pathway for the Red Devils to reclaim their status among Europe’s elite, making it essential for them to perform well early in the competition.
Ten Hag is keen to maintain Manchester United’s reputation as one of the favorites to lift the Europa League trophy this season. To do this, he may need to balance his lineup carefully, utilizing squad depth to manage player fatigue and injuries. Key players who have been heavily relied upon may see some time on the bench, while those who have not featured as prominently will have the chance to showcase their skills and stake a claim for a more regular spot in the starting eleven.
As Ten Hag continues to shape his team, the Europa League provides an opportunity not just for rotation, but also for building confidence and cohesion among the squad. A successful campaign in Europe could reignite the team’s morale and push them forward in the Premier League as well. With the stakes high, United fans will be hoping for an inspiring performance against FC Twente, setting a positive tone for their Europa League journey.
