Marco Silva expressed his satisfaction with Fulham’s remarkable performance in their thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Brentford, asserting that his team truly deserved the win. The match, held at Craven Cottage, showcased Fulham’s resilience, particularly in the face of adversity after Vitaly Janelt’s opening goal for Brentford in the 24th minute, which seemed to put the visitors in a strong position.
Despite going behind early, Fulham demonstrated their determination and attacking prowess throughout the match, amassing a staggering 26 shots, with 12 on target. However, they struggled to break through Brentford’s defense until the dying moments of the game. It was Harry Wilson who emerged as the hero for Fulham, coming off the bench to score twice in stoppage time, securing a crucial victory and ensuring his team's place in the standings. Wilson’s goals were particularly significant; he became only the sixth player in Premier League history to score both an equalizer and a winner after the 90th minute, with his second goal being Fulham’s latest-ever Premier League winner, scored at 96:46.
After the match, Silva commended his team’s determination to clinch the win in the final moments, stating, "It was definitely a deserved win. We started on the front foot and dominated the entire game." He emphasized that despite conceding first, Fulham maintained their confidence and kept pressing forward, creating enough chances to have been ahead by halftime.
On the other hand, Brentford’s situation has become increasingly concerning, as they have now dropped a league-high 14 points from winning positions this season. Their struggle was further compounded by a streak of five consecutive away defeats in the Premier League. In an unprecedented statistic, Brentford has become the first team in league history to score first in four consecutive away games and lose each one. Although they managed to maintain their lead for a significant portion of the match, late lapses in concentration allowed Fulham to capitalize, with Brentford even missing a chance to secure the win themselves when Fabio Carvalho’s shot was saved by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the 95th minute.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank acknowledged the difficulties of finding positives after such a disappointing defeat, remarking, "It was tough. It is emotionally very tough right now." He recognized Fulham’s superior performance on the day but also praised his team's defensive effort and commitment, emphasizing the need to regroup and learn from the experience.
Overall, the match highlighted Fulham’s ability to fight back against the odds while raising questions about Brentford’s consistency and performance under pressure. As the Premier League season unfolds, both teams will look to build on their respective performances, with Fulham aiming to maintain their momentum and Brentford seeking to turn their fortunes around.
