Cody Gakpo has expressed his excitement over Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive performances since joining Liverpool, particularly his vital role in the team’s midfield. Although Gravenberch only moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2023, Gakpo, who was already familiar with him from their time in the Eredivisie, quickly recognized his immense talent. Under the guidance of coach Arne Slot, Gravenberch has thrived in a deeper midfield role, showcasing his tactical versatility and earning praise for his contributions on both ends of the pitch.
One of the standout statistics for Gravenberch this season is his remarkable ability to disrupt opposition attacks. He is the only midfielder in Europe's top five leagues to have recorded over 30 tackles and interceptions, highlighting his defensive prowess. This is a crucial aspect of Liverpool's play, as they often rely on high-pressing, and Gravenberch’s ability to regain possession and break up opposition play has made him an invaluable asset in the midfield.
Gakpo, a Dutch international teammate of Gravenberch, was already well-acquainted with the 21-year-old’s skills from their time together in the Netherlands. “We [the Dutch players at Liverpool] knew Ryan already from his time at Ajax,” Gakpo shared with Men in Blazers. “He’s always had a great football brain, and it’s been fantastic to see him settle in and make such an impact here at Liverpool.” Gakpo is confident that Gravenberch will continue to excel and be a key figure in the upcoming clash against Southampton.
As for Southampton, they are facing a tough challenge when they host Liverpool at St. Mary's Stadium. The Saints have been struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, and they are coming off a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Wolves before the international break. Southampton’s woes this season are compounded by their inability to score goals, as they currently have the fewest goals in the league and one of the lowest shot conversion rates.
Despite these challenges, Southampton’s head coach, Martin, remains optimistic about his team’s prospects against Liverpool. He has high regard for Liverpool, describing them as “the best team in the country right now” and expressing excitement for the upcoming match. “I’m really excited about Sunday,” Martin said, acknowledging Liverpool’s strong form and the solid foundation left by their previous manager. This positive outlook will likely boost Southampton's morale as they prepare for a tough encounter.
Mateus Fernandes has been one of Southampton’s standout players this season. He has consistently started matches for the Saints and was particularly notable in their loss to Wolves, where he registered the highest expected goals tally for his team from three shots. Fernandes has also been one of Southampton’s top chance creators, underlining his importance in their attacking play. As Southampton struggles to find goals, his creativity will be crucial in trying to break down Liverpool’s defense.
On the other hand, Liverpool will rely heavily on the brilliance of Mohamed Salah, who has been in scintillating form this season. Salah has been directly involved in numerous goals, both scoring and assisting in several Premier League matches. He is closing in on Wayne Rooney’s record for the most games with both a goal and an assist, further cementing his legacy as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players. His ability to produce decisive moments in crucial games has made him a key figure in Liverpool's attacking lineup, and his contribution will be pivotal against Southampton.
With Gravenberch's rising form, Gakpo’s positive influence, and Salah's consistent brilliance, Liverpool will be looking to extend their strong run and keep their momentum heading into the match against Southampton. The Saints, despite their struggles, will need to produce an inspired performance to challenge one of the Premier League’s top sides.
