Since the beginning of November, City has conceded more goals than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues, allowing 21 goals in their last nine matches.

Manchester City is going through a challenging phase, and Pep Guardiola has admitted to questioning his own strategies as the team battles through a difficult run of form in the Champions League. A 2-0 loss to Juventus in Turin has left City in a precarious position, sitting 22nd in the 36-team table and threatening their chances of progressing to the Champions League knockout stages. This defeat marks their seventh loss in the last ten matches across all competitions, equaling the number of losses they had suffered in their previous 105 games under Guardiola.

Despite the mounting pressure, Guardiola has stayed calm, reflecting on his methods but maintaining faith in his team's abilities. "Of course, I question myself, but I’m stable in both good and bad moments," Guardiola stated. "I try to find a way to improve. I am incredibly honest with myself. If we play well, I say we played well, and today I thought we played well." His optimism stems from his belief that, despite the result, City deserved more from their performance in Turin. Guardiola felt that the team’s approach and overall performance were solid, even if the result didn’t reflect it.

However, Guardiola's confidence is tempered by the team’s recent defensive frailties. Since the beginning of November, City has conceded more goals than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues, allowing 21 goals in their last nine matches. This defensive vulnerability has raised alarms, especially as City prepares for upcoming Champions League fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge, both of which will be crucial to their hopes of progressing to the next stage.

Ilkay Gundogan, a key midfielder for City, was more critical of their performance, particularly their lack of discipline in duels and vulnerability to dangerous counterattacks. "We were careless in certain situations, which cost us," Gundogan said, expressing frustration with their inability to control key moments in the match. But Guardiola, while acknowledging areas for improvement, disagreed with his midfielder’s assessment. "I don’t agree with Ilkay," Guardiola remarked. "It’s tough, but apart from one or two games, we’ve actually played quite well. We’ve controlled possession and created chances, but we need to be more clinical and composed."

Guardiola pointed out that despite the defeat, City dominated possession with 68.9% of the ball against Juventus, far outplaying the Italian side in key metrics like box entries (34 to 13) and final-third touches (59 to 24). "Our game will save us," Guardiola asserted. "We can do it. We’re still playing well in many areas. Our style of play will ultimately lead us to success."

However, the results have been concerning. In addition to the loss to Juventus, City also suffered a 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP and were held to a 3-3 draw by Feyenoord, marking the first time in Guardiola’s career that he has failed to win three consecutive group-stage matches in the Champions League. The last time City went on such a winless streak in the group stage was during the 2014-15 season, when they went four games without a victory. Guardiola’s record in the competition is under scrutiny, but he remains steadfast in his belief that his methods will bring the desired results.

As Manchester City prepares for their final two group-stage matches—against Paris Saint-Germain on January 22 and Club Brugge the following week—Guardiola is determined to guide his team through this difficult period. While he acknowledges the team's shortcomings, particularly in defense and key moments of the game, he is focused on improving their performance and regaining their momentum.

Despite the recent struggles, Guardiola continues to believe in his team’s potential. He is confident that, with persistence and a focus on refining their style of play, City can recover and achieve their goals in the Champions League. With a renewed sense of determination, Guardiola is committed to helping his team overcome this challenging phase and return to winning ways.
