The match remained evenly poised until the 71st minute when Monaco substitute George Ilenikhena broke the deadlock with a composed finish, securing a crucial win for his team.

Barcelona's head coach, Hansi Flick, remained optimistic despite his team’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco in their Champions League opener. The match, played at Monaco's Stade Louis II, was marked by an early turning point when Barcelona defender Eric Garcia was sent off after just 10 minutes for a foul on Takumi Minamino, who had latched onto a poor pass from goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The red card forced Barcelona to play with 10 men for nearly the entire match.

Monaco quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage, taking the lead six minutes later when Maghnes Akliouche scored a well-placed shot past Ter Stegen in the 16th minute. Despite the setback, Barcelona fought back with determination, and their efforts were rewarded when young sensation Lamine Yamal scored a brilliant equaliser in the 28th minute. Yamal’s left-footed strike into the bottom corner not only levelled the score but also made him the second-youngest scorer in Champions League history, at just 17 years and 68 days old.

The match remained evenly poised until the 71st minute when Monaco substitute George Ilenikhena broke the deadlock with a composed finish, securing a crucial win for his team. The goal marked Ilenikhena’s second Champions League goal, following a previous strike against Barcelona last season while playing for Antwerp.

For Barcelona, the loss was a bitter start to their Champions League campaign and the third time in their history that they’ve lost their opening match in the competition, following defeats to Newcastle in 1997-98 and Bayern Munich in 2021-22. However, despite the setback, Flick expressed confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back and perform well in the tournament.

Flick, in his first Champions League match as Barcelona’s coach, emphasised the positives, noting Yamal’s historic goal and the team’s resilience in fighting back despite being down to 10 men. He acknowledged the challenges but remained hopeful that Barcelona would still have a successful campaign in Europe.
