Hoffenheim has made a strategic move by acquiring Nigerian striker Gift Orban from Lyon for a reported €9 million, bolstering their attacking options. The 22-year-old forward, who transferred to Lyon from Belgian side Genk in January 2024, has shown his potential with an impressive goal-scoring record despite limited game time. Orban has scored two goals in five appearances for Lyon this season, starting in just three of those matches. With a remarkable conversion rate of 33.33%, scoring from two out of his six attempts, Orban has proven his ability to make an impact in the limited minutes he's played, with a total of 259 minutes on the field.
Orban’s career took off during his time at Genk, where he scored an impressive 32 goals in 52 competitive matches, attracting attention from top clubs across Europe. However, due to financial struggles at Lyon, the French club decided to sell the young striker for a fee lower than the €10 million they originally paid to Genk earlier this year. Lyon’s financial difficulties have been exacerbated by their provisional relegation to Ligue 2, a decision enforced in November, which will be final if the club’s form doesn't improve by the end of the season.
Hoffenheim’s managing director of sport, Andreas Schicker, expressed his excitement over the signing, highlighting Orban’s speed and depth, which were qualities the club was searching for in a forward. Schicker believes that Orban’s goal-scoring ability and passion for the game will add significant value to Hoffenheim’s attacking unit, especially as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
Orban’s departure marks the third major exit from Lyon this month, following goalkeeper Anthony Lopes’ free transfer to Nantes and winger Jeffinho’s €5.3 million move to Botafogo in Brazil. The club is clearly in a rebuilding phase, needing to restructure both financially and on the pitch to avoid the threat of relegation. These player sales are part of Lyon’s broader strategy to stabilize their finances, with the club looking to recover from the impact of their difficult season.
For Orban, this move to Hoffenheim represents a fresh start, where he will aim to continue developing his talent in the Bundesliga. As the club navigates through a tough period, Hoffenheim will be hoping that Orban can live up to his potential and become a key figure in their pursuit of higher league positions. For Lyon, the departure of Orban is another indication of the difficult times they face, and they will need to act quickly to address their on-field issues in order to secure their future in Ligue 1.
