India vs Pakistan Match to Go Ahead as Scheduled
India are set to face Pakistan in the SAFF Championship 2026 on November 5 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, despite uncertainty over squad availability and the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) competing international commitments.
The fixture is part of the 15th edition of the regional tournament, scheduled to run from November 5 to 17. India enter the competition as defending champions and will be seeking a record-extending 10th title.
However, the build-up to the tournament has been complicated by a scheduling clash involving the Indian Super League (ISL), the FIFA international window and India’s planned friendlies against New Zealand.
Recent reports indicate that India’s participation remains intact and that arrangements are being made to ensure the Pakistan fixture goes ahead. The key uncertainty concerns how many players will be available to the Indian coaching staff for the opening game.
The central problem is that the SAFF Championship begins before the next FIFA international window opens on November 9.
Under the current schedule, India’s match against Pakistan takes place on November 5. Since the game falls outside the international window, ISL clubs are not automatically required to release their players for the fixture.
At the same time, clubs are managing their domestic league commitments. Releasing key players early could affect their preparations and availability for league matches.
AIFF therefore faces the challenge of assembling a competitive squad without disrupting domestic club schedules or compromising the senior national team’s separate international programme.
The federation had previously explored using an Under-23-heavy or reserve squad for the SAFF Championship while sending the senior team to New Zealand for two international friendlies.
Clubs to Release Players in Stages
According to reports citing sources close to the developments, Indian clubs have agreed to release some players for the opening match against Pakistan, with additional players expected to join the SAFF squad when the FIFA window begins.
The phased-release arrangement could allow India to participate as planned, but it may leave the team without its full complement of intended players for the opening fixture.
The final composition of the squad will be important. The coaching staff must balance the need for experienced players with the availability of younger footballers and reserves who can step into the national setup.
The reported agreement offers a potential way forward, although the precise availability of individual players will depend on club releases and the federation’s final selection decisions.
India’s New Zealand Friendlies Add to the Challenge
India are also scheduled to play two friendlies against New Zealand on November 12 and 15. These matches fall within the FIFA international window, making the release of eligible players easier to arrange.
The senior team’s New Zealand assignment is part of a series of sporting events marking 100 years of sporting relations between the two countries.
AIFF has prioritised these friendlies for the senior national team, while planning to use a separate group for the SAFF Championship. The arrangement is intended to ensure India can fulfil both commitments.
However, the overlapping schedules create logistical and selection difficulties. The federation must coordinate two squads, manage player availability and ensure that the SAFF team has enough time to prepare for its matches.
India’s SAFF Championship Fixtures
India have been drawn in Group B alongside Pakistan and the Maldives. The tournament will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The published schedule lists India’s group-stage fixtures as follows:
- November 5: Pakistan vs India
- November 11: India vs Maldives
- November 14: Semi-finals
- November 17: Final
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. India, who won the 2023 edition, will be looking to defend their title despite the uncertainty surrounding squad availability.
The group-stage match against Pakistan will be an important early test for the team, particularly if some intended players are unavailable for the opening fixture.
What This Means for Indian Football
The scheduling dispute highlights the continuing tension between club commitments and national-team requirements in Indian football.
International tournaments that begin outside FIFA windows can make it difficult for national federations to secure players from domestic clubs. The challenge becomes more complicated when the national team has multiple assignments during the same period.
For AIFF, the immediate priority is to ensure that India compete in the SAFF Championship while fulfilling the New Zealand commitments. The phased-release arrangement could help resolve the immediate issue, but the final squad and the availability of key players remain crucial.
The coming days should provide greater clarity on the selected players and the arrangements made with ISL clubs. Until the final squad is confirmed, the extent of India’s selection constraints for the Pakistan match remains uncertain.
