They came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when star forward Diego Mauricio unleashed a long-range shot that sailed just wide of the post, giving Mumbai City goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa a scare.

In an intense but goalless encounter at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha FC and Mumbai City FC were forced to share the spoils in a 0-0 draw in their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 clash on Thursday. Despite a promising start from the home side and multiple attacking opportunities for both teams, neither managed to find the back of the net, leaving the match without a winner.

Odisha FC, buoyed by the support of their passionate home crowd, started with high energy and looked to assert dominance early. They came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when star forward Diego Mauricio unleashed a long-range shot that sailed just wide of the post, giving Mumbai City goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa a scare. The hosts continued to press, with another solid attempt from Mauricio testing Lachenpa’s reflexes, but the Mumbai defense, led by the resolute Lachenpa, stood firm.

Mumbai City FC, known for their clinical counter-attacking style, struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the opening stages. However, they grew into the game as the half progressed. The Islanders’ midfield orchestrated some dangerous moments, but they couldn’t manage to get past Odisha’s well-organized defensive unit, with defenders like Carlos Delgado and Shubham Sarangi clearing the ball effectively when under pressure.

As the second half unfolded, Odisha FC maintained their offensive pressure, but Mumbai City’s defense, especially Lachenpa, proved to be a brick wall. The goalkeeper made crucial saves, including a particularly sharp reflex stop to deny Odisha’s Nikhil Raj, whose header seemed destined for the top corner. Despite sustained possession and attacking phases for the home side, Mumbai City remained resilient and defended well as a unit.

Mumbai also had their chances to grab the lead. Bipin Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte combined well on the flanks, but Odisha’s defensive structure, led by goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh, was well-organized and made sure to thwart any real threat. A few shots from Mumbai City, including one from Igor Angulo, were blocked or sent wide, leaving them frustrated at the lack of clinical finishing.

As the match came to a close, both teams seemed content with the single point, despite having moments to claim all three. For Odisha FC, it was a missed opportunity to add to their tally at home, while Mumbai City FC could not capitalize on their more composed second-half performance.

The result means both teams remain in the mid-table, with Odisha FC still struggling to find their rhythm after a solid start to the season. Mumbai City FC, despite their defensive solidity, will be disappointed not to have taken all three points in a match where they showed glimpses of their attacking potential but couldn’t convert.

For Odisha FC, coach Clifford Miranda will likely reflect on missed chances and the need for a sharper finishing edge, while Mumbai City’s Des Buckingham will look at improving their offensive efficiency in upcoming fixtures. Both teams will now shift focus to their next encounters, hoping to bounce back and return to winning ways in the competitive ISL 2024-25 season.
