Lionel Messi’s tenure with Inter Miami looks set to extend beyond the current terms of his contract, with club owner Jorge Mas confirming ongoing discussions about a potential contract renewal after 2025. Speaking with optimism about Messi’s future at the club, Mas hinted that the Argentine superstar would still be with Inter Miami when the team opens its new stadium, the Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.
Messi’s current contract is set to expire at the end of 2025, but both Messi and the club have an option to extend it. Mas expressed his belief that Messi will continue to play a key role in the team’s success, saying, “As I’ve said before, I would fully expect that after a successful 2025 season and with a trophy-laden year, Leo Messi will be our No. 10 when we open our new stadium in 2026.”
Since joining Inter Miami in 2024, Messi has had an immediate and profound impact, scoring 21 goals and assisting 17 in just 21 matches, playing a pivotal role in helping the club secure the prestigious Supporters' Shield. His influence has been felt both on and off the pitch, as he has not only elevated the team's performance but has also contributed to the growth of soccer’s popularity in the United States.
Along with his success on the field, Messi is also playing a significant role off the field in shaping the future of the club. Following the departure of manager Tata Martino due to personal reasons, Messi’s input is crucial in the decision-making process regarding the next head coach. There is growing speculation that his former Barcelona and Argentina teammate, Javier Mascherano, could be appointed as the new manager, with Messi's endorsement potentially playing a decisive role in that selection.
As Inter Miami continues to grow in stature, Messi's presence and leadership will be central to the club’s ambitions, both in the short term and as they look to build towards their future with the new stadium. His influence and legacy within the MLS and at Inter Miami look to be just beginning, with the possibility of an extended stay adding more excitement for fans and the soccer community.
