Juventus experienced another frustrating result in Serie A as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lecce, with Ante Rebic scoring a last-minute equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time. The match, which took place at the Allianz Stadium, left Juventus grappling with inconsistency as they continue to drop valuable points in the league.
The game seemed to be going in Juventus' favour after Andrea Cambiaso's deflected shot found the back of the net in the 68th minute, giving the home side the lead. Cambiaso’s strike appeared to be a stroke of luck, as his shot took a deflection off Lecce’s Kialonda Gaspar, wrong-footing goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone, who could do nothing to stop it. Juventus looked set to secure all three points, but the match took an unfortunate turn in stoppage time.
Lecce, who had fought hard throughout the match, found their chance in the dying moments when Nikola Krstovic made a brilliant run and crossed the ball perfectly for substitute Ante Rebic. The Croatian forward, known for his ability to cause problems for Juventus, made no mistake, finding the back of the net to secure a dramatic equaliser for Lecce. This late goal handed Juventus yet another disappointing draw, with their hopes of climbing higher in the table slipping further away.
Juventus had several opportunities to take control of the match earlier. Just seven minutes into the game, Khephren Thuram missed a clear chance to put Juventus ahead after a brilliant assist from Kenan Yildiz. Later in the match, Timothy Weah thought he had scored when he netted a rebound from a long-range shot by Teun Koopmeiners, but his goal was ruled out for offside, much to the frustration of the Juventus players and fans.
This draw, Juventus' eighth in 14 league matches, leaves them in sixth place, six points adrift of the leaders, Napoli. Despite possessing quality in their squad, Juventus’ inability to convert opportunities and their ongoing inconsistency have hindered their progress in the league. Lecce, on the other hand, will take heart from this result, which keeps them in 16th place, just two points above the relegation zone.
Ante Rebic’s goal against Juventus also added to his growing reputation as a thorn in their side. With this last-minute strike, Rebic has now contributed to five Serie A goals against Juventus (four goals and one assist), a tally that is his joint-highest against any opponent in the competition, alongside Torino. His familiarity with Juventus and knack for scoring against them was a painful reminder of Juventus' inability to close out matches.
As Juventus continues to search for the consistency needed to mount a serious challenge for the top positions in Serie A, they must improve their ability to finish games, especially when they are in the lead. With the season progressing, Juventus will need to address these issues quickly if they are to avoid slipping further behind the league leaders and remain in contention for a top-four finish.
