Lyon delivered a commanding performance against Rangers, securing a 4-1 victory in the Europa League clash at Ibrox, with both Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette each finding the back of the net twice. The match showcased Lyon's attacking strength and highlighted their aspirations in the tournament.
Fofana opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a rebound from Rayan Cherki's shot that hit the post. His quick reaction set the tone for Lyon's attacking dominance. However, Rangers quickly responded through Tom Lawrence, who equalized shortly after, finding the net after a blocked attempt from Cyriel Dessers. The home side seemed to gain momentum with this equalizer, but Lyon’s offensive depth proved too formidable.
Lacazette, marking his 50th appearance in the Europa League, was determined to make an impact. He restored Lyon's lead in the 30th minute after a mistake by Rangers defender Connor Barron, who misplayed a pass. Fofana seized the opportunity to assist Lacazette, who finished with ease, placing Lyon ahead once again. Just before halftime, Lacazette extended the lead with a stunning strike from 25 yards out, showcasing his remarkable skill and precision.
The second half continued to favor Lyon as Fofana scored his second goal, converting a low cross from Cherki at the back post. This goal not only solidified Lyon's control over the match but also emphasized Cherki's significant contributions, as he assisted both of Fofana's goals and demonstrated his creative playmaking abilities. With six goal involvements in just five Europa League starts—comprising three goals and three assists—Cherki has emerged as a key player for Lyon this season.
Rangers struggled to contain Lyon's relentless attacking play, and despite their previous win against Malmo, they found it challenging to respond to Lyon's offensive onslaught. The defeat was particularly noteworthy as it marked the first time Rangers conceded four goals at home in the Europa League or UEFA Cup, a statistic that underscores the severity of the loss.
Lyon's victory not only boosts their confidence but also establishes them as strong contenders in the competition. With the combination of Fofana and Lacazette’s striking prowess and Cherki’s creative flair, Lyon showcased their attacking depth and efficiency, signaling their intent to make a deep run in the Europa League this season.
