Gareth Taylor was full of praise for Manchester City's resilience after their gritty 2-1 victory over Hammarby in the UEFA Women's Champions League, a result that secured their spot in the quarter-finals. The match, held at Tele2 Arena, saw Khadija Shaw play a crucial role, scoring both goals for City. Shaw opened the scoring in the 31st minute, before Ellen Wangerheim equalized for Hammarby shortly after halftime. However, Shaw was on hand to score the decisive goal, cementing her place as City's top scorer in the competition, surpassing previous record-holders Georgia Stanway and Janine Beckie.
Despite dominating possession, City faced a tough challenge throughout the game. Hammarby, who had 14 shots to City's 13, posted a higher expected goals (xG) total of 2.15, compared to City's 1.07, underscoring the tough nature of the encounter. This victory marked City's first appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals since 2021, and Taylor admitted that it had been a challenging but rewarding night.
"I’m really pleased with the team’s performance tonight," said Taylor. "It was about qualification for us, and the players showed great character to get the result." Taylor acknowledged that, although a draw would have been enough to secure their progression, the team's mindset was always focused on winning. "There were a couple of ways we could do it, but the players didn’t think like that. They were focused on getting the win," he added.
The match conditions at Tele2 Arena also posed difficulties. The pitch surface was lively, which made it harder for City to control the game as they would have liked. However, despite these obstacles, the team remained determined and saw the game through. Taylor also credited Hammarby’s aggressive approach, which made it a difficult encounter, especially as the Swedish side pushed for the equalizer in the second half.
Manchester City’s victory continues their unbeaten record against Swedish teams in European competition, now having won six out of six encounters. With their place in the Champions League quarter-finals secured, Taylor and his players now shift their focus to the next phase of the competition, where they will aim to build on this hard-earned success and push further towards their ultimate goal of European glory.
