Mark Robins has been appointed as the new manager of Stoke City, signing a contract for three and a half years, bringing an air of optimism to the club as they struggle in the Championship. Robins takes over the managerial role after Narcis Pelach’s departure last week, following a disappointing tenure that saw the club languishing in 18th place, just four points clear of the relegation zone. Pelach's sacking marked the third managerial change for Stoke in the 2024-25 season, underlining the instability that has plagued the club in recent months.

Robins, who was out of work since his exit from Coventry City in October, steps into a challenging situation. However, his experience, particularly during his time at Coventry, is seen as a major asset. Over his two stints at Coventry, Robins managed 387 games, securing 157 wins and establishing a solid win rate of 39.97%. His most successful periods came at Rotherham United (43.41%) and his first tenure at Coventry (51.52%), where he guided the club from League Two to the Championship and nearly achieved Premier League promotion, falling short in the 2022-23 play-off final to Luton Town. In addition to his league success, Robins led Coventry to a semi-final appearance in the FA Cup, where they narrowly lost to Manchester United in a penalty shootout.

Stoke City’s sporting director, Jon Walters, praised Robins for the legacy he left at Coventry, describing him as someone who built a team with a strong identity and significantly improved the club’s fortunes. Walters expressed confidence that Robins' proven track record and experience would translate well at Stoke, giving fans hope for a revival under his leadership. Robins' main task will be to steady the ship and improve Stoke’s current standing in the league, with the club currently sitting in a precarious position just above the relegation zone.

His appointment brings a fresh sense of direction to the club, and the expectations are high. Stoke's immediate goal is to avoid relegation this season, with Robins working to turn things around in the second half of the campaign. Long-term, the club will be hoping that Robins can lay the groundwork for sustained success and take them back to the upper echelons of the Championship.

Robins' first match as Stoke City manager will be against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ryan Shawcross, who has been serving as caretaker manager following Pelach’s departure, will continue to take charge for Stoke’s New Year’s Day clash with Burnley. The club’s supporters are hoping Robins’ appointment will bring stability and progress, as Stoke City look to climb out of the lower half of the table and build a brighter future under their new manager.
