Mikel Arteta was left frustrated with Arsenal's defensive lapses following their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Despite leading early in the match through a well-taken goal by Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal were unable to hold onto their advantage, with Pedro Neto scoring a long-range equaliser just 10 minutes later. Leandro Trossard also missed a late chance to give Arsenal all three points, leaving Arteta visibly disappointed on the sidelines.
In his post-match comments, Arteta expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Arsenal conceded the equaliser, especially after they had dominated large portions of the match. "The disappointment of not getting three points is bigger [than being satisfied], and it will probably be bigger after watching it back," Arteta said. He emphasized that while Arsenal were the better team in many phases of play, their defensive performance fell short of the standards he expects.
Arteta specifically pointed to the disorganization during the second phase of a Chelsea set-piece, which allowed Neto to fire a shot from distance and equalise. While he acknowledged Neto's quality, Arteta was clear that Arsenal should have defended better, especially in such crucial moments. "It’s not good enough. We have to be better defensively. These are the things we have to improve on if we want to be serious contenders," he added.
The draw marked a significant setback for Arsenal, as it was their fourth consecutive Premier League match without a win, a run that is their worst since April 2023. Prior to this, the Gunners had been in impressive form, winning 21 of their last 25 league games. Arteta also noted that Arsenal have faced 15 or more shots in four Premier League matches this season, double the number from the entire previous campaign, suggesting that their defensive vulnerabilities have been a recurring issue.
Despite these defensive concerns, Arteta found some positives in the match, particularly in the return of captain Martin Ødegaard. Ødegaard, who had been out since September due to injury, played a key role in Martinelli's goal and brought much-needed energy to the midfield. Arteta praised Ødegaard for his leadership, noting that the Norwegian’s presence had a significant impact on the team’s flow and rhythm.
Declan Rice, who had been dealing with injury concerns after missing the Champions League match against Inter Milan, also returned to action. Arteta commended Rice for his resilience, acknowledging that the midfielder played through discomfort and contributed significantly to the team’s efforts.
Despite the frustrations with the result and defensive lapses, Arteta noted that Arsenal have shown remarkable spirit and energy throughout this tough period. He is hopeful that with key players returning to full fitness, Arsenal will improve and push forward in their bid for success this season.
