Despite early pressure from the home team, Arsenal failed to convert their chances, and Newcastle capitalized on their opponents' wastefulness.

Newcastle United delivered a commanding performance in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, defeating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The victory has put Eddie Howe's side in a strong position ahead of the return leg at St James' Park on February 5, with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon securing the important advantage.

Despite early pressure from the home team, Arsenal failed to convert their chances, and Newcastle capitalized on their opponents' wastefulness. The match began with a high tempo, as Arsenal pushed forward in search of an early goal. Jurrien Timber had an early opportunity, but he missed a header in the first few minutes, which set the tone for a frustrating evening for the Gunners. Gabriel Martinelli also came close, hitting the post with a well-struck shot after a brilliant run, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, was able to keep the score level.

In contrast, Newcastle showed clinical finishing. In the 38th minute, Jacob Murphy’s clever touch set up Isak, who struck the ball off the crossbar to open the scoring. The Swede’s goal was his 50th for the club in all competitions since his move in August 2022, and it highlighted his importance to Newcastle's attack. Isak has been in exceptional form, scoring ten goals in his last nine appearances, and he is now the third-highest scorer in the Premier League during this period, behind only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.

Newcastle started the second half with confidence, and they quickly doubled their lead in the 48th minute. A shot from Isak was parried by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, and Gordon was on hand to tap in the rebound and make it 2-0. Arsenal’s defense was caught off guard by the rebound, allowing Newcastle to take a commanding lead. The Gunners’ attempts to respond were thwarted by some solid defending and wasteful finishing.

Arsenal had multiple chances to get back into the game but were unable to make the most of their opportunities. Kai Havertz, in particular, missed a crucial chance from close range, while Jorginho fired over the bar from a good position. These missed opportunities added to the frustration for Mikel Arteta’s side, who will need to perform much better in the second leg to have any hope of overturning the deficit.

For Newcastle, the win was a significant step towards securing a place in the EFL Cup final. The team was resolute defensively, with Dubravka making key saves when required, and their clinical attacking play proved to be the difference. Howe’s side also impressed with their ability to absorb pressure from Arsenal and then hit them on the counter-attack with devastating effect.

In addition to Isak’s milestone, the partnership between Isak and Jacob Murphy has been one of Newcastle’s standout features this season. The duo has combined for seven goals in the Premier League so far, the most by any duo in the competition. This chemistry was evident in the first leg, with Murphy playing a key role in both goals.

Newcastle now heads into the second leg with a solid advantage, and Arsenal will need to improve drastically if they are to have any chance of progressing to the final. Arteta’s side has the quality to mount a comeback, but they will need to be much more clinical in front of goal if they are to turn the tie around at St James' Park.

Overall, it was a night to remember for Newcastle, who will take great confidence from their clinical performance and solid defensive display. With Isak in red-hot form and the team showing excellent organization, they will be hopeful of securing a place in the final and continuing their pursuit of silverware this season.

Isak has been in exceptional form, scoring ten goals in his last nine appearances, and he is now the third-highest scorer in the Premier League during this period, behind only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.
