Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has put to rest the swirling rumors surrounding the potential departure of his two main goalkeepers, Ederson and Stefan Ortega. Speaking during a press conference ahead of the club's upcoming pre-season preparations, Guardiola confirmed that both players are committed to remaining at the Etihad Stadium, despite reported interest from clubs across Europe.
In recent weeks, there had been growing speculation that Ederson, City's long-serving Brazilian first-choice goalkeeper, might seek a new challenge after years of dominance in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Ortega, who has impressed as a dependable backup, had also been linked with moves to clubs in Germany and Spain in search of regular first-team football.
Guardiola, however, was unequivocal in his statement. “Ederson is not going anywhere. He is a vital part of our team, both on and off the pitch. The way he controls play from the back and his experience in big matches makes him irreplaceable,” said the City boss. “Stefan Ortega has also shown professionalism and quality whenever he has been called upon. We are very happy with both and there are no plans to let them go.”
This announcement will come as a relief to Manchester City supporters, who had feared a summer reshuffle in the goalkeeping department. Ederson has been a transformative figure since his arrival in 2017, redefining the modern goalkeeper role with his distribution and calmness under pressure. He has played a key role in City’s domestic and European successes, including multiple Premier League titles, EFL Cups, and the historic UEFA Champions League win.
Stefan Ortega, who joined City in 2022, has also earned praise for his sharp reflexes and reliability. Despite limited appearances, he made a significant impact, particularly in domestic cup competitions and when Ederson was unavailable due to injury. His performances have reportedly drawn attention from Bundesliga clubs, but Guardiola’s comments suggest the German shot-stopper will continue to be a part of City’s plans.
The manager also addressed the importance of squad stability as the club looks ahead to another demanding season. “In a team like ours, depth is key. We compete on multiple fronts, and we need players who can step up at any time. Both Ederson and Ortega give us that security,” he added.
Manchester City will soon begin their pre-season campaign with international tours and friendly matches as they prepare for the 2025–26 season. Guardiola’s confirmation brings clarity to the club's goalkeeping situation and signals the team’s intent to maintain consistency in a crucial area of the pitch.
As the transfer window unfolds, speculation may continue, but City appears firm in its stance on retaining key personnel. Guardiola’s public vote of confidence in his goalkeepers reinforces the message that the club remains focused on defending its titles with a strong and unified squad.
