A devastating incident in Huancayo, Peru, has left the football community in mourning as 39-year-old player José Hugo de la Cruz Meza tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning during a local league match. The match, which featured de la Cruz playing as a defender for Juventud Bellavista against Familia Chocca, was taking place in the Chilca district when the unforeseen tragedy occurred.
The game began with excitement, as Bellavista took an early 2-0 lead. However, just 22 minutes in, dark clouds gathered and a thunderstorm approached, prompting the officials to pause the match for safety reasons. As the players awaited resumption, a sudden lightning strike hit the field, resulting in chaos. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a spark and smoke cloud near where de la Cruz collapsed, indicating he was struck directly. Video footage of the incident, captured by local station Onda Deportiva Huancavelic, revealed the harrowing moment when several players were thrown to the ground.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and de la Cruz was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he was declared dead shortly after arrival. The incident did not only affect de la Cruz; goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, 40, sustained severe burns and remains in critical condition. Two other players injured in the incident have since been discharged, while two others are still under medical observation, as reported by the Peruvian news agency Andina.
This tragic event has sparked an outpouring of support from the local community, with the Huancayo municipality publicly expressing their condolences to de la Cruz’s family and extending well-wishes to the injured players. "We stand in solidarity and extend our sincere condolences," the municipality stated. "We also wish a speedy recovery to the other four players injured in this tragic accident."
The shocking nature of this incident has raised significant concerns about safety measures at sporting events, particularly in regions like Huancayo, which are prone to thunderstorms, especially during the monsoon season. This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of similar past incidents globally, including the death of a 30-year-old Indonesian footballer earlier this year, and a lightning strike in the Democratic Republic of Congo 25 years ago that resulted in the deaths of 11 people.
As the football community grapples with this heart-wrenching loss, calls for enhanced safety protocols during adverse weather conditions at sporting events have become more urgent than ever. The legacy of José Hugo de la Cruz Meza will be remembered not only for his contributions to the sport but also as a catalyst for change in ensuring the safety of players during matches.
