City’s post-shot expected goals on target (xGoT) reached 2.98, but the team's inability to convert opportunities and a stellar performance from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen kept them from scoring.

As the final international break of 2024 arrives, the Premier League standings are beginning to take a clearer shape, with Liverpool holding a five-point lead at the top. Their impressive 3-0 victory over Aston Villa has made them the favorites for the title, according to Opta's supercomputer. Meanwhile, Manchester City is enduring a challenging period, suffering their fourth consecutive loss across all competitions after falling 2-1 to Brighton. This marks a troubling streak for City, who are struggling both in domestic and international fixtures. Chelsea and Arsenal hold onto third and fourth places, respectively, following a draw in their latest match.

Manchester United, under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Leicester City, but the scoreline didn’t fully reflect their performance. Despite claiming the three points, United's expected goals (xG) were only 0.69, lower than Leicester's 0.77. Bruno Fernandes marked his 250th club appearance with both a goal and an assist, but United struggled to create many quality chances from their 13 shots. The team capitalized on the limited opportunities they had, with Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho being particularly effective in front of goal. Leicester, meanwhile, had five shots on target from six attempts, but they failed to convert any of them, leaving them with no points despite their solid attacking efforts.

United's attack continues to be a challenge, a problem that plagued Erik ten Hag’s tenure. Ruben Amorim will be looking to build on the success Van Nistelrooy has found, though the team’s ongoing struggles with consistency remain an area of concern. The win over Leicester, though important, wasn’t as dominant as it seemed on paper, highlighting issues that need addressing for United to challenge for the top spots.

In contrast, Manchester City is in a crisis after suffering four straight losses for the first time since August 2006, with Pep Guardiola also experiencing his first-ever four-match losing streak as a manager. City’s latest defeat came against Brighton, where they lost 2-1 despite Erling Haaland scoring for the team. Brighton's Joao Pedro and Matt O'Riley secured the win, and Brighton deservedly claimed the points, with an xG of 2.29 compared to City's 2.22. City’s post-shot expected goals on target (xGoT) reached 2.98, but the team's inability to convert opportunities and a stellar performance from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen kept them from scoring. Despite creating five big chances and hitting the woodwork, City’s finishing was lackluster, and their defense was exposed, allowing eight big chances to Brighton.

Bournemouth, despite creating the highest xG of the weekend at 2.61, were unlucky to lose 3-2 to Brentford. Andoni Iraola’s team produced a strong performance, with more touches in Brentford’s box than any other team except Tottenham. However, their finishing let them down, as they couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Their xGoT dropped to 1.68, while Brentford's finishing was more clinical, with their xGoT rising to 1.84. While Bournemouth could certainly feel hard done by, Brentford’s efficient finishing made the difference in a match where the statistics suggest the result could have gone either way.

As the international break provides a pause, the Premier League picture is becoming clearer. Liverpool is firmly in control, while Manchester City faces a challenging period to overcome their recent setbacks. Meanwhile, teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United will be aiming to maintain or improve their positions, while clubs like Bournemouth, despite their misfortunes, will look to bounce back from narrow defeats and push for better results in the coming weeks.
