After years of speculation and anticipation, Kylian Mbappe, the star forward from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), officially joined Real Madrid this summer. The move marks the culmination of a long-standing connection between Mbappe and the Spanish giants, following his decision not to renew his contract with PSG, which expired this summer. Despite PSG's intense efforts to retain him, the allure of playing for Real Madrid, coupled with an enticing financial offer, proved too strong for the World Cup winner to resist.
However, a recent revelation by the French newspaper L’Equipe adds a surprising twist to Mbappe’s transfer saga. According to the report, Mbappe could have ended up at Liverpool instead. This development emerged after Mbappe expressed a desire to leave PSG in 2022, just two months after he had signed a two-year contract extension with the French club. This extension had initially led many to believe he would continue leading PSG’s quest for both domestic and European success.
The report sheds light on Mbappe’s dissatisfaction with PSG, which stemmed from the club’s failure to deliver on promises of high-profile signings to strengthen their squad for the Champions League. Notable transfer targets, including Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva, were rumored but ultimately did not materialize. This lack of substantial reinforcement left Mbappe feeling disillusioned with the club’s management.
In response to his frustrations, Mbappe sought a new challenge and reportedly reached an agreement with Liverpool. The Premier League club entered the race for the French star and submitted a significant bid of €200 million (£169 million) to PSG. Despite this substantial offer, the move did not come to fruition, and Mbappe’s journey eventually led him to Real Madrid.
The report underscores how close Mbappe was to making a high-profile move to Liverpool before ultimately deciding to join Real Madrid, highlighting the complex dynamics and shifting allegiances in the world of elite football transfers.
