Liverpool staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Southampton at St Mary's, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points. The match saw Mohamed Salah play a key role, scoring two second-half goals to overturn a 2-1 deficit and ensure all three points for his team.
The game started positively for Liverpool when Dominik Szoboszlai capitalized on a poor clearance from Southampton's Flynn Downes to put his side ahead in the 30th minute. However, Southampton responded just before halftime. A foul on Tyler Dibling by Andrew Robertson led to a penalty, which was initially saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. But Adam Armstrong reacted quickly to convert the rebound and equalize for the home side.
In the second half, Southampton took the lead in the 56th minute. A brilliant assist from Armstrong found Mateus Fernandes, who calmly slotted home to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. However, Liverpool was far from finished. In the 65th minute, Salah controlled a pass from Ryan Gravenberch expertly to score his first goal, leveling the match at 2-2.
The turning point came shortly after when Southampton substitute Yukinari Sugawara handled a Salah cross inside the penalty area, giving Liverpool a chance from the spot. Salah confidently converted the penalty, scoring his second goal of the game and putting Liverpool 3-2 ahead. Salah nearly completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute, but his shot hit the post, preventing him from adding another goal to his tally.
Despite Southampton’s spirited performance, they remain at the bottom of the table, still five points adrift of safety. In contrast, Liverpool’s win marked their tenth victory in twelve Premier League matches this season, with just one draw and one loss. The win also saw manager Jürgen Klopp join an elite group of managers, including Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti, as one of the fastest to achieve ten Premier League wins after taking charge.
Salah’s brace took his tally to five consecutive league games with goals, matching a personal record he set in October 2021 when he scored in seven straight matches. His penalty also marked his 100th away goal for Liverpool across all competitions, further cementing his legacy at the club. With this victory, Liverpool are in strong form ahead of their upcoming clash with Manchester City, who suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Tottenham earlier in the weekend.
