Sergio Conceicao, the highly regarded Portuguese coach, has expressed his strong belief that AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has the potential to become the best player in the world. Conceicao’s comments came in the wake of Leao’s standout performance in AC Milan's thrilling 3-2 victory over Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana. Leao, who came off the bench in the second half, made an immediate impact, contributing significantly to his team's success.
During the match, Leao was involved in several key moments that turned the tide in Milan's favor. He assisted Tammy Abraham’s crucial goal, which gave Milan the lead, and also won the free-kick that led to Theo Hernandez's stunning 20-yard strike. Additionally, Leao played a role in setting up Christian Pulisic's equalizer, further demonstrating his attacking prowess and vision on the pitch. Despite not being fully fit, Leao’s influence was undeniable. He created two key chances for his team and maintained an impressive 88.9% passing accuracy in the final third, among players who made more than three passes in the match.
Conceicao, who has known Leao for a long time, was full of praise for the young forward, calling him "phenomenal." He pointed out that while both of them share Portuguese roots, Leao is more relaxed compared to his own intensity. Nonetheless, Conceicao believes that with continued development, Leao can achieve greatness. "With a few improvements, he can be the best player in the world," he remarked. The coach emphasized that Leao's individual brilliance could shine even brighter if he channels his talent towards team success, which would see his growth accelerate.
This victory also marked a significant achievement for AC Milan, as it secured their eighth Supercoppa Italiana title, equaling Inter Milan’s record. The win was also important for Milan’s morale, as it was their first back-to-back win over their city rivals since a streak that lasted from November 2010 to August 2011. The triumph underscored Milan's resurgence in Italian football, signaling their return to the top echelons of Serie A and European football.
Conceicao's comments on Leao highlight the immense potential the player possesses. With his physical attributes, technical skill, and versatility, Leao has all the tools to become one of the finest players in the world. However, as Conceicao rightly points out, there are areas of improvement that will be essential for Leao to reach that level. If Leao continues to refine his game and build on his current success, it’s clear that the footballing world could be witnessing the rise of one of its future stars.
For AC Milan and its supporters, Leao’s growth and success could be a game-changer. His performances in key matches like the Supercoppa Italiana show that he has the capability to influence high-stakes games, and with the right guidance and development, he could one day be regarded as one of the best players in the world.
