His style of football, characterized by possession-based play and high pressing, has become the blueprint for modern football success, and his dominance has been felt across Spain, Germany, and England.

Pep Guardiola is widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers of all time. His tactical acumen and ability to consistently win titles have set him apart in the world of football management. Over the course of his career, he has achieved tremendous success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, amassing 12 league titles in just 15 seasons. His style of football, characterized by possession-based play and high pressing, has become the blueprint for modern football success, and his dominance has been felt across Spain, Germany, and England.

However, this season has been different for Guardiola and his Manchester City team. After a series of defeats across all competitions, including four consecutive losses, Guardiola’s side now finds itself trailing Liverpool by five points in the Premier League, raising questions about whether his grasp on the title race is slipping. While Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, might be in a strong position to challenge Guardiola’s hold on the title this season, Slot would not be the first to outshine the City manager. Throughout his career, only three other managers have managed to defeat Guardiola in a league season, each one overcoming one of football's most successful tacticians to win a league title.

Jose Mourinho – Real Madrid (2011-12)

During his time at Barcelona, Guardiola transformed the Catalan club into one of the greatest teams in football history, securing multiple Champions League titles and achieving an unprecedented treble. Guardiola’s Barcelona was known for its relentless attacking style and superior possession play. However, in the 2011-12 season, Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho managed to dethrone Guardiola’s Barcelona in La Liga.

Mourinho, with a star-studded Real Madrid squad that included Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Mesut Özil, and Ángel Di María, orchestrated a remarkable season. Madrid finished the season with a record-breaking 100 points, outlasting Barcelona and ending their three-year dominance in Spain. It was a season that saw Mourinho’s tactical mastery come to the forefront, and his side’s ruthlessness in key games helped them secure the league title, delivering Guardiola his first-ever league defeat as a manager. This achievement was a significant moment in both Mourinho and Guardiola’s careers, as it marked the first time that Guardiola faced real competition for the La Liga crown.

Antonio Conte – Chelsea (2016-17)

In 2016, Guardiola made his highly anticipated move to the Premier League, joining Manchester City. With his success in Spain and Germany, Guardiola was expected to continue his dominance in England, but his first season in the Premier League proved to be a tough challenge. Manchester City struggled with consistency, and Guardiola’s system took time to adapt to the intensity of English football.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea made the most of City’s early struggles. Conte’s Chelsea were virtually unstoppable in the 2016-17 season, with the Italian manager implementing a tactical 3-4-3 system that helped his team dominate the Premier League. Chelsea finished the season with 93 points, a full 15 points ahead of Guardiola’s City, who ended the season in fourth place. For Guardiola, this was a season without silverware, the first time in his managerial career that he had finished a campaign without winning a major trophy. Conte’s tactical nous and Chelsea's solid defensive foundation helped them win the Premier League in impressive fashion, overshadowing Guardiola’s City team.

Jurgen Klopp – Liverpool (2019-20)

The 2018-19 Premier League season was one of the most thrilling title races in recent memory. Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool went head-to-head for the top spot, with City narrowly edging Liverpool to the title by a single point. Liverpool finished with a remarkable 97 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome City’s 98 points, as Guardiola’s team clinched the title by the slimmest of margins. It was a season where both teams were exceptional, and it was widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier League seasons in history.

However, Klopp’s Liverpool responded in dominant fashion the following season. In the 2019-20 Premier League campaign, Liverpool were virtually unstoppable. They secured the title with a record-breaking 99 points, finishing 18 points clear of second-place Manchester City. Klopp’s high-intensity, gegenpressing style, combined with the attacking brilliance of players like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino, helped Liverpool secure their first league title in 30 years. For Guardiola, this was a bitter blow as his City team, which had dominated English football in recent years, failed to defend their crown.

Klopp’s success in 2019-20 was a clear indication that even the most successful managers, like Guardiola, can be overtaken. Klopp’s Liverpool team were not just good—they were exceptional. Their consistency, resilience, and attacking prowess made them the best team in England, and Guardiola’s Manchester City had to settle for second place. This season was the perfect example of how, despite Guardiola's brilliance, there were managers who could disrupt his dominance and take the league title away from him.
