Tyrell Malacia is edging closer to making his return to action for Manchester United after a lengthy spell on the sidelines following knee surgery at the end of the 2022-23 season. Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy provided a positive update on the Dutch left-back’s progress, confirming that Malacia has resumed training and is nearing match fitness. Malacia's return comes as a welcome boost for Manchester United, who have faced defensive challenges this season. Luke Shaw, another key defender, has been sidelined with a calf injury and has not yet played in the 2024-25 season. Shaw is, however, making gradual progress in his recovery and is expected to return to full training soon. In Shaw’s absence, the team has relied on Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot as makeshift left-backs.

In addition to Shaw’s injury, Harry Maguire has also been dealing with fitness issues. The central defender was forced off during a match against Aston Villa last month due to an injury, and Van Nistelrooy confirmed that Maguire is currently focusing on indoor rehabilitation. Despite the injury setbacks, Manchester United’s squad has managed to adapt, but the return of these key players will be crucial for their upcoming fixtures.

Looking ahead, Manchester United is preparing for their Europa League clash against PAOK at Old Trafford on Thursday. This match will be an important one as they aim to continue their campaign in Europe. Afterward, they will face Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday in what will be their final match before Ruben Amorim takes over as the club's permanent manager from Sporting CP. The return of Malacia, Shaw, and Maguire is expected to further strengthen the defense as the team pushes forward in both domestic and European competitions.
