Ruud van Nistelrooy, who stepped in as Manchester United's interim manager, has yet to engage in discussions with the club's incoming head coach, Ruben Amorim. Following his first Premier League match in charge—a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Chelsea—Van Nistelrooy reflected on the performance and the challenges ahead. In this encounter, Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United with a penalty in the 70th minute after Rasmus Hojlund was fouled by Chelsea's Robert Sanchez. However, just four minutes later, Moises Caicedo leveled the match, denying United a crucial victory at Old Trafford.
Van Nistelrooy is set to manage the team's next two fixtures, which include an important Europa League clash against PAOK and a Premier League match against Leicester City, before Amorim officially takes the reins on November 11. Despite having joined Erik ten Hag's coaching staff only in July, the Dutchman’s future at the club remains uncertain, as he has not confirmed whether he will stay once Amorim is in charge.
Expressing his sentiments about the recent match, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the disappointment of not securing a win, especially given the chances his side created. "I am disappointed we didn’t win; we had better chances," he stated, highlighting the need for more clinical finishing. He praised the team's overall performance, emphasizing their determination and effort on the pitch. "But overall, the performance was fantastic. They left their all out there on the pitch," he remarked.
While the draw left United with a total of 12 points in the Premier League, it also underscored a troubling trend, as this marked their worst start to a league season since the 1986-87 campaign, when they managed only eight points after ten games. Additionally, with just nine goals scored thus far, this represents their lowest tally at this stage of the season since 1973-74. Despite these concerning statistics, Van Nistelrooy maintained a positive outlook, focusing on the team's display rather than the results.
As he prepares for the upcoming matches, the interim manager remains optimistic about the potential for improvement and growth within the squad. The opportunity to lead United through these crucial fixtures will not only be a test of his managerial capabilities but also an important time for the players to adapt to the changes in leadership and direction as they look to turn their season around. The club and its supporters will be eager to see how Van Nistelrooy's tenure progresses and how the team responds in the next few games before the transition to Amorim's management begins.
