Vlahovic and McKennie Propel Juventus to 2-0 Victory Over Manchester City

City’s defensive frailties were again evident, particularly in away matches where they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in eight consecutive games.

Manchester City’s aspirations to advance in the Champions League suffered a significant setback as they were defeated 2-0 by Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, marking their seventh loss in the last ten matches across all competitions. This result leaves City in 22nd place out of 36 teams in the standings and raises serious concerns about their form heading into the critical phase of the tournament. With upcoming fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge — both of whom are also facing potential elimination — City’s path to qualification now appears increasingly difficult.

City’s recent struggles have been alarming, with only one win in their last ten matches. Despite dominating possession with a staggering 68.9%, they were unable to translate that control into meaningful chances, registering an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.97 from 12 attempts. This lack of clinical finishing was evident throughout the match, as City was unable to capitalize on their early opportunities. Erling Haaland’s close-range shot, in particular, was well saved by Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, highlighting City’s ongoing difficulties in converting high-quality chances into goals.

Juventus, on the other hand, seized the opportunity in the second half. The match turned in the 53rd minute when Dusan Vlahovic scored a header off a cross that Ederson could have dealt with better at his near post. The goal gave Juventus a 1-0 lead, and while City pushed for an equaliser, they struggled to break down a resilient Juventus defense. Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne both had chances but were unable to find the back of the net.

The match was effectively sealed in the 78th minute when Weston McKennie, coming off the bench after recovering from injury, scored against the run of play. McKennie latched onto a cross from Timothy Weah and calmly slotted the ball home to double Juventus’ lead. The goal not only secured the win for Juventus but also marked McKennie’s return to action after a period of absence, lifting Juventus to 14th in the standings.

City’s defensive frailties were again evident, particularly in away matches where they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in eight consecutive games. This ongoing vulnerability is a significant concern for Pep Guardiola as his side struggles to find the balance between their attacking and defensive play.

Pep Guardiola is facing a challenging period, with this loss marking his third consecutive group-stage defeat in the Champions League — a first in his illustrious career. This result also extends City’s winless streak to three matches in the competition, their longest since the 2014-15 season, when they went four games without a victory (D2 L2). Guardiola will need to address both his side's defensive lapses and lack of clinical finishing if they are to turn their form around and secure qualification in their remaining fixtures.

In the meantime, Juventus will be buoyed by the victory, as they move on to the quarter-finals, proving that despite their own challenges, they have the quality to perform on the big stage. For Manchester City, however, the loss is a major blow, leaving them with much work to do in order to stay alive in the competition.

This result leaves City in 22nd place out of 36 teams in the standings and raises serious concerns about their form heading into the critical phase of the tournament.
