Tomas Soucek shared that he and his West Ham teammates had a heartfelt video call with Michail Antonio before their 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday. Antonio, who had been involved in a car accident on Saturday, was rushed to the hospital for surgery after suffering a fractured lower limb. Despite the shocking and distressing news, the West Ham squad rallied around their injured teammate, showing their support through a video call before the match at London Stadium.
During the match, Soucek and Jarrod Bowen both dedicated their goals to Antonio as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement. The victory came as a symbol of unity for the team, with the players playing not just for themselves, but for Antonio as well.
West Ham also expressed their gratitude to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Antonio after the crash. Pictures of the wrecked vehicle circulated on social media, raising concerns about Antonio’s well-being, but it was later confirmed that he was stable in the hospital. This reassurance was a relief to the team, and they showed their commitment by connecting with Antonio virtually before the match, lifting his spirits ahead of what was a tough weekend for the player and his family.
Soucek, visibly emotional, recalled his reaction to the news. "It was really tough for us," he said. "I was with my children when I first saw the news, and I immediately reached out to find out how Michail was doing." The accident affected not only Antonio and his family but also his teammates, who were deeply moved by the incident.
Head coach Julen Lopetegui also dedicated the win to Antonio and his family, acknowledging the difficult week the team had experienced. “We are happy; we dedicate this victory to Michail,” Lopetegui stated. The manager emphasized the challenging emotional rollercoaster the squad had gone through, but he expressed confidence in Antonio’s recovery, saying, “He deserves this.” The support shown by the team and the club in this difficult time highlights the deep camaraderie and solidarity within the squad.
West Ham’s performance on Monday, and the emotional support they extended to Antonio, further strengthened the bond between the players and their commitment to each other both on and off the field. As Antonio begins his recovery, the team’s dedication and care serve as a powerful reminder of the unity that drives their success.
