In a significant setback for the Indian men's hockey team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, defender Amit Rohidas has been handed a one-match suspension due to a red card he received during the quarter-final against Great Britain on August 4.
The suspension, imposed by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), will keep Rohidas out of India’s upcoming semi-final match. Following the controversial decision, Hockey India has lodged an official complaint regarding the umpiring during their quarter-final win over Great Britain, which was decided in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The complaint highlights the red card issued to Rohidas in the 17th minute of the match as a key issue. Hockey India has raised concerns about the video review system and the overall quality of umpiring, questioning its effectiveness in ensuring fair play. "Hockey India has formally expressed concerns about the officiating in the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics (Men's tournament), particularly during the critical match between India and Great Britain. The complaint points to several inconsistencies in decision-making that may have impacted the game’s outcome," a Hockey India statement read.
The statement further noted that these issues have eroded confidence in the officiating among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India has called for a thorough review to maintain the sport's integrity and ensure fair play in future matches.
