Arjun Erigaisi has made a remarkable leap in the World Chess Rankings, moving up to No. 2 following his victory over Alexey Sarana of Serbia in Round 3 of the ongoing Chennai Grand Masters 2024 on Thursday, November 7. This win not only helped the 21-year-old Indian grandmaster reclaim his 2800 Elo rating but also propelled him above Fabiano Caruana to the second spot in the global rankings.
Erigaisi’s journey in the tournament has been nothing short of impressive, as he continues to showcase his deep tactical understanding and sharp skills. In his Round 3 match against Sarana, Arjun started with the black pieces and responded to Sarana's Queen's Pawn Opening by engaging him in the Indian Game, before swiftly launching into an East Indian Defense. Both players castled their kings early, setting up a tense battle on the board. However, Arjun’s precise calculations and strategic play saw him gain the upper hand, which he expertly converted into his second win of the tournament.
With this victory, Arjun not only increased his Elo rating but also reinforced his place at the top of the Masters category, where he shares the lead with Iran's Amin Tabatabaei, who has also had an impressive showing. The Masters category in the Chennai Grand Masters 2024 is highly competitive, with an average rating of 2729, making every victory crucial for the players. In Round 3, Tabatabaei caused a major upset by defeating the highly-rated French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, further raising the stakes in the tournament. Meanwhile, Levon Aronian strengthened his position with a solid win over Parham Maghsoodloo, keeping himself in contention for the top spot.
In another exciting development, India’s Vidit Gujrathi bounced back from two consecutive losses to secure a gritty draw against local favourite Aravindh Chithambaram, showing resilience and determination under pressure.
In the Challengers category, Pranav V has been in stellar form, securing his third consecutive win by defeating Karthikeyan Murali. This victory solidified his position as the tournament leader in the Challengers category, with a perfect 3.0 score. Meanwhile, Pranesh M also achieved a key victory, defeating Vaishali Rameshbabu to strengthen his standing. The match between Raunak Sadhwani and Leon Mendonca ended in a draw, as did the encounter between Harika Dronavalli and Abhimanyu Puranik, both of which contributed to the tight standings in the Challengers category.
With three rounds completed, Arjun and Tabatabaei sit jointly at the top of the Masters category with 2.5 points each, while Aronian trails in third place with 2.0 points.
