Sumit Nagal's journey at the 2025 Australian Open came to a swift end as he crashed out in the first round of the men's singles on Sunday (January 12), losing in straight sets to Czechia's Tomas Machac. The match took place at Melbourne Park, where Nagal, ranked 91st in the ATP singles standings, faced the 25th-ranked Machac. The final scoreline was 6-3, 6-1, 7-5, with the contest lasting two hours and five minutes.
Nagal, the only Indian player competing in singles at the Australian Open this year, started the match with promise. He served efficiently, dropping only two points in his first three service games. However, Machac, who had a strong showing at the 2024 US Open, where he reached the fourth round, found his rhythm and broke Nagal's serve in the seventh game to lead 4-3. Machac then comfortably closed out the first set, taking it 6-3.
In the second set, Nagal had a brief opportunity to gain an early advantage when he earned a break point in the opening game. However, Machac held firm, saving the break point and then controlling the remainder of the set. Nagal struggled to match Machac's level, and the Czech player wrapped up the second set in just 36 minutes, taking it 6-1.
Trailing by two sets, Nagal showed determination in the third set. He managed to secure an early break, racing to a 3-0 lead, and extended that advantage to 5-3. At this stage, it seemed as though Nagal might mount a comeback, but a series of unforced errors, including a double fault, allowed Machac to break back and level the set at 5-5. With the momentum shifting, Machac then broke again to claim the final set 7-5, sealing his victory in the process.
This result marks a disappointment for Nagal, who had a breakthrough year in 2024. Last year, he qualified for the main draw and caused a sensation by becoming the first Indian man in 35 years to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam when he defeated Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik. However, his success was short-lived as he fell in the next round to Juncheng Shang of China. Nagal had hoped to build on his progress, but his first-round exit at this year’s Australian Open ends his singles campaign early.
While Nagal's singles campaign has ended, Indian interest in the Australian Open continues in the doubles event. Defending men's doubles champion Rohan Bopanna, who claimed the 2024 title alongside Australia's Matthew Ebden, will return to defend his title. This year, Bopanna will partner with Colombia's Nicolas Barrientos, hoping to repeat his success in the 2025 tournament.
Despite the early exit, Nagal's journey in Grand Slam tennis continues to inspire, and fans will be watching closely as he works to rebound and push forward in his career.
