Stefanos Tsitsipas humorously remarked that “karma hit me” after he suffered an unexpected first-round defeat to American up-and-comer Alex Michelsen at the Australian Open. The 18-year-old Michelsen triumphed in a four-set battle, winning 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, marking his second career victory over Tsitsipas and making the Greek star the first high-profile casualty of this year’s tournament.
This loss was especially significant for Tsitsipas, as it marked his earliest exit from the Australian Open since 2018. After reaching the final at Melbourne Park in 2023, the Greek player was hopeful for a strong showing this year, but he found himself unable to navigate past the rising talent in the first round. Tsitsipas, who had pulled out of the doubles event just before the tournament, expressed regret over the decision, noting how his early exit now leaves him with a long wait before his next competitive action.
In an interview following the defeat, Tsitsipas reflected on the frustration of an early Grand Slam exit. "The most frustrating part about losing in the first round of a Grand Slam is having way too much time to recover," he said. "I would much rather not have enough time to recover, as it forces you to solve problems quickly. It just sucks to be around for a while with nothing to focus on before my next tournament comes.”
Since the beginning of the 2023 season, Tsitsipas has only won two titles and has seen a drop in his ATP ranking to 12th, a far cry from his previous career-high ranking. When asked if his perspective on tennis had changed since his breakthrough years, the 26-year-old admitted that he no longer feels the same hunger he did when he first entered the sport. "For sure, I had a fresher mind back then. It felt like I was hungrier in a completely different way than I am now," Tsitsipas said. “Back then, I had this hunger to try and make a life out of tennis and get off to a strong start in my career. That drive was something that stood out the most."
Tsitsipas’ early exit and his subsequent reflections raise questions about his current mindset and motivation. After achieving success early in his career, including reaching the Australian Open final last year and consistently performing in the top ranks, Tsitsipas now finds himself dealing with a period of relative inconsistency. His inability to capture more titles in 2023 and his recent decline in the rankings suggest he may be in a transitional phase in his career.
Despite this setback, Tsitsipas remains a formidable talent, and his journey is far from over. With time, he will look to rebuild his form and rediscover the drive that helped him rise to the top of the game. However, for now, he must navigate this challenging moment, using his early exit as motivation to return stronger and more focused in the future.
