American tennis player Taylor Fritz, a native of Southern California, has decided to donate the prize money from his first-round victory at the 2025 Australian Open to support the victims of the devastating wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. Fritz won $132,000 for his win over compatriot Jenson Brooksby in the first round and has pledged to send this amount directly to wildfire relief funds.
In a heartfelt statement after his second-round win, Fritz explained, "I just want everyone to stay safe. It's just insane what happened. I wanted to say something after my first round match. I'm going to be donating my first round prize money to the LA wildfire relief funds."
Fritz’s decision comes at a time when the wildfires have caused severe destruction across the Los Angeles metropolitan area, with at least 25 people confirmed dead and thousands of homes lost. The fires, which started on January 7, 2025, have resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in the country’s history, with the potential to be the most costly wildfire disaster in U.S. history.
As a lifelong resident of Southern California, Fritz feels a strong connection to the region, making his decision to contribute even more meaningful. "SoCal has been my home forever," he said. "I still spend a lot of time in LA, but I lived in LA for quite a while. I have friends impacted; family not so much." However, Fritz’s family has not been untouched by the fires, with his brothers’ childhood home destroyed in the blaze. "I had some family have to evacuate. The house that my brothers grew up in burnt down," he added.
The 2023 U.S. Open finalist, who is currently seeded No. 4 at the Australian Open, emphasized the importance of helping those in need, especially when in a position to do so. "A lot of people are affected by it," Fritz said. "I feel like if you're in a place to help, then you should."
Fritz, whose generous act highlights his strong sense of community and compassion, is preparing for his third-round match at Melbourne Park, where he will face French tennis veteran Gael Monfils. Should he win, he will move on to the fourth round of the first Grand Slam of the year.
The wildfires in Los Angeles and surrounding areas continue to wreak havoc on communities, and Fritz's donation is a timely and heartfelt contribution to the relief efforts, helping bring attention to the ongoing crisis.
