Damian Lillard stepped up in a big way for the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night, leading them to a hard-fought 106-103 win over the Miami Heat in the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks’ star player was sidelined due to swelling in his left knee, which he sustained during warmups, leaving Lillard and his teammates to pick up the slack.
Despite the absence of their two-time MVP, Lillard delivered a standout performance, pouring in 37 points and dishing out 12 assists. His scoring display helped keep the Bucks in control for much of the game, although the Heat mounted a late comeback. At one point, Milwaukee held a commanding 22-point lead, but Miami fought back, cutting the deficit to just a few points in the closing moments.
With the game hanging in the balance, AJ Green made two crucial three-pointers down the stretch to seal the win for the Bucks, who remained unbeaten in the NBA Cup with a 3-0 record this season. Lillard, however, emphasized that while his individual effort was important, it was ultimately a team effort that got the job done.
"Replacing Giannis is never one person’s job," Lillard said after the game. "It’s always going to be a team effort, and everyone needs to contribute when a player of his caliber is out." He acknowledged that the team had to step up across the board to compensate for the absence of their star forward.
The Bucks are accustomed to having Antetokounmpo leading the way. The Greek Freak has been in spectacular form this season, averaging a career-high 32.4 points per game with an impressive 60.8% shooting efficiency. He also contributes significantly on the boards with 11.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. However, the Bucks' only other loss this season came in the one game Antetokounmpo missed earlier, a defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 4.
Following the win, Bucks coach Doc Rivers did not provide an update on Antetokounmpo’s injury but did mention that the team would need to be prepared to continue without him for as long as necessary. The Bucks are set to play the Washington Wizards on Saturday, and their ability to continue performing without their superstar will be crucial for their success going forward.
As for the Heat, they were able to capitalize on the Bucks' early mistakes and push the game to the wire, but ultimately fell short. Miami’s Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo both had strong performances, but they could not overcome the Bucks' late-game execution.
For the Bucks, Lillard's leadership and the collective effort of the team will continue to be essential if they hope to remain successful while Antetokounmpo is sidelined. With the NBA Cup record intact and the season still in its early stages, the Bucks will look to build on this victory and continue their strong start to the season as they face the Wizards on Saturday.
