Caitlin Clark made history by setting a new WNBA single-season record for assists, reaching 320 during the Indiana Fever's narrow 78-74 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Friday night. The rookie phenom broke Alyssa Thomas's previous record of 316 assists from last season, capping off an impressive debut season with a stellar performance in the final game.
Although Clark had a quiet first half, going scoreless after missing all five of her field goal attempts and picking up her third foul late in the second quarter, she turned the game around in the second half. Despite the early struggles, Clark showcased her resilience and impact, finishing the game with 18 points, all of which came in the second half. She also added nine assists and eight rebounds, contributing in every facet of the game.
The Aces went into halftime with a comfortable 43-35 lead, and at one point, they extended their advantage to 13 points. However, Clark ignited in the third quarter, scoring 14 of her 18 points during that period alone. Her scoring surge helped trim the Fever's deficit to just three points by the end of the quarter, making it a tightly contested game heading into the final stretch.
Though Indiana ultimately fell short, Clark’s record-breaking performance cemented her as one of the most exciting young players in the league. Her ability to lead and distribute the ball with precision, combined with her scoring prowess, has made her a standout throughout her rookie season. With 320 assists in her first year, Clark not only set a new benchmark for assists in a single season but also established herself as a future star in the WNBA
