India’s top badminton player, PV Sindhu, made a strong start at the China Masters 2024, advancing to the second round with a confident straight-games victory over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the women’s singles opening round on Wednesday, November 20. The match, played at the Shenzhen Bay Gymnasium in Shenzhen, China, saw the two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion Sindhu dominate her Thai opponent with a 21-17, 21-19 win in just 50 minutes.
Sindhu’s victory was an efficient one, as she was able to maintain control throughout the match, taking a steady lead in both games. She will now look to continue her good form as she prepares to face the winner of the first-round match between Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min and Hong Kong’s Happy Lo Sin Yan, who will meet on Thursday, November 21. Sindhu’s bid for a successful tournament campaign is off to a solid start, and she will be hoping to build on this result as the competition progresses.
Joining Sindhu in the second round of the China Masters is Malvika Bansod, who also secured a spot in the women’s singles second round after a thrilling three-game battle against Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt. Bansod showed great resilience and determination as she came from a game down to win 20-22, 23-21, 21-16 in a match that lasted for an hour and 13 minutes. The young shuttler, who was the runner-up at the Hylo Open earlier this month, showed impressive composure under pressure to outplay the Danish opponent. Bansod will next face the eighth-seeded Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the second round, and her strong performance will certainly make her a player to watch in the upcoming matches.
A major highlight of the opening rounds came from Anupama Upadhyaya, who made a stunning breakthrough by defeating world No. 15 Beiwen Zhang of the United States. The 19-year-old from Almora, ranked No. 50 in the world, showed remarkable maturity and composure to clinch the victory 21-17, 8-21, 22-20 in a 48-minute contest. This victory marked Upadhyaya’s first-ever appearance in the second round of a BWF Super 750 event. The win was a massive achievement for the young Indian shuttler, who stunned the experienced Zhang, and it sets her up for a match against Japan’s Natsuki Nidaira in the second round.
In addition to the singles success, there was more good news for India, as B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy advanced to the mixed doubles second round. Their strong showing in the opening round added to the overall positive performance for Indian badminton players at the China Masters 2024, signaling a promising start to the tournament.
With Sindhu, Bansod, Upadhyaya, and the mixed doubles duo all progressing, India’s shuttlers are poised to make an impact in the tournament’s next stages. The China Masters 2024 is shaping up to be a significant event for Indian badminton, and these performances indicate that the country’s players are in excellent form heading into the later rounds.
