Talented Indian shuttler Malvika Bansod has achieved a significant milestone in her career by advancing to the quarterfinals of a Super 1000 event for the first time at the China Open in Changzhou on Thursday, September 19. In a thrilling women's singles round-of-16 match, Bansod overcame a formidable opponent, Kristy Gilmour, with a hard-fought victory. The match lasted over an hour, with Bansod securing the win with scores of 21-17, 19-21, 21-16.
Bansod's victory is notable not only for the high-profile nature of the tournament but also because she defeated the higher-ranked Gilmour, who is currently the world number 25 and a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist from Scotland. This win propels Bansod into the quarterfinals, making her only the second Indian women's singles player, after P.V. Sindhu, to reach this stage at the China Open S1000 in the World Tour era.
Reflecting on her achievement, Bansod described reaching the quarterfinals of a Super 1000 tournament as a "dream come true" and the biggest achievement of her career so far. She revealed that she had visualized this moment before the tournament and was thrilled to have made it into the top 8. Bansod also acknowledged the challenges she faced during the match, particularly the difficult court conditions. "There was a lot of drift, especially in the second and third games, making it difficult to control the shuttle," she said. Despite these challenges, she expressed her gratitude for managing to secure the win and continue her impressive run in the tournament.
This achievement marks a significant step forward in Bansod's career and highlights her growing prominence in international badminton. Her performance at the China Open not only underscores her skill and determination but also sets a promising precedent for future tournaments.
