PV Sindhu kept India’s hopes alive in the Denmark Open 2024 by showcasing her resilience and skill in a thrilling second-round match against China’s Han Yue on October 17. Competing at the Arena Fyn in Odense, Sindhu fought back from a game down to secure a spot in the women’s singles quarter-finals, winning the match with scores of 18-21, 21-12, and 21-16. The match lasted a competitive 63 minutes, highlighting Sindhu's determination and fighting spirit.
This victory marked a significant milestone for Sindhu, the former world champion and current world No. 18, as it was her first win over a top-10 player since she triumphed over Han in the Malaysia Masters final back in May. With this win, Sindhu improved her head-to-head record against Han to an impressive 7-1, solidifying her status as one of the top contenders in women’s badminton.
Sindhu’s performance was particularly notable after dropping the first game, where Han’s aggressive play and strategic shots initially put her on the back foot. However, Sindhu adjusted her strategy effectively, dominating the second game and displaying her trademark resilience. In the deciding game, she maintained her composure and capitalized on her experience, ultimately overcoming Han’s challenge.
The victory is especially crucial for Sindhu, who has been working with coaches Anup Sridhar and Lee Hyun-il to refine her game. The two-time Olympic medallist is now set to face Indonesia's Paris Olympic bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the quarter-finals. This will be Sindhu’s third quarter-final appearance this year, having previously reached the last eight in the French Open and the Spain Madrid Masters, in addition to her finals appearance in Malaysia on the BWF World Tour.
While Sindhu continues her journey in the tournament, the day wasn’t as kind to other Indian participants. All remaining Indian players were eliminated from the competition on October 16. This included the women's doubles teams of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, as well as Sikki Reddy and Sumeeth Reddy in mixed doubles. The duo of Jolly and Gopichand lost to Malaysia’s fifth seeds Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan after initially leading in the opening game, ultimately finishing the match with scores of 21-19, 17-21, and 15-21. Meanwhile, Sikki and Sumeeth fought valiantly against Canada’s Kevin Lee and Eliana Zhang but fell short in a tightly contested match, ending with scores of 22-20, 19-21, and 20-22.
As the lone Indian representative in the tournament, Sindhu's performance in the upcoming quarter-finals will be watched closely by fans and supporters, hoping she can build on her momentum and continue her pursuit of success in the Denmark Open 2024.
