Hockey India is proudly celebrating 100 years of Indian hockey's storied legacy, marking a monumental milestone in the sport's history. This centennial celebration honors the nation's long-standing achievements in the world of hockey and reflects on its transformative journey from its early years to the present day. The centenary celebrations are set to be a year-long event, featuring a series of special initiatives, with the return of the prestigious Hockey India League (HIL) and the historic launch of the Women’s Hockey League being among the major highlights. These initiatives aim to celebrate the past, promote the sport's future, and ensure that gender equality in athletics continues to move forward.

India’s journey in the world of hockey began on natural turf and has evolved through decades to the modern era, which now features world-class artificial surfaces. The Indian hockey team’s performance on the international stage has solidified its status as a global powerhouse in the sport. Since the formation of the national body on November 7, 1925, in Gwalior, India has gone on to win eight Olympic Gold medals, a Hockey World Cup, and numerous other accolades. The sport has become a symbol of national pride, with India’s victories at the Olympics, World Cup, and Champions Trophy becoming landmarks in the country’s sporting history.

In recent years, Indian hockey has experienced a resurgence, with both the men’s and women’s teams achieving remarkable feats. The men’s team earned back-to-back Olympic medals, while the women’s team made history by securing a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, highlighting the rise of women’s hockey in India.

Hockey India President, Dr. Dilip Tirkey, expressed excitement about the centenary celebrations and the impact of the relaunch of the Men’s Hockey India League and the debut of the Women’s Hockey India League. "This year-long celebration is not only a reflection of our rich history but also a testament to our commitment to growing the sport and promoting talent across the country," said Dr. Tirkey. He emphasized that the return of these leagues would help highlight India’s tradition of excellence while encouraging new talent to emerge on the national stage.

The Secretary General of Hockey India, Shri Bhola Nath Singh, also commented on the significance of this centenary year, emphasizing how it symbolizes both India's rich heritage and its forward-looking vision for the sport. "The centenary celebration of Indian hockey is an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and honor the legacy of our players. The introduction of the Women's Hockey League is a milestone in the quest for gender equality in sports, which will play a crucial role in shaping the future of hockey in India," said Singh.

Hockey India’s focus on innovation and development is also reflected in its infrastructure and programs. Over the years, Hockey India has invested in world-class facilities, training centers, and tournaments, allowing India to continue producing world-class athletes. With initiatives like the online player registration system and structured coaching education pathways, the organization is working to bring the sport in line with international standards.

The centenary celebration also offers a chance to look forward to the next century of Indian hockey. With increasing participation at the grassroots level, more exposure for the women’s game, and a renewed emphasis on inclusivity and innovation, Hockey India is poised to further elevate the sport to global prominence.

These initiatives aim to celebrate the past, promote the sport's future, and ensure that gender equality in athletics continues to move forward.
